How to Personalize Your New Home

Having a new home to decorate is almost always fun. However, if you’re like many of us, a lot of the items you have are either hand-me-downs or various things you’ve collected over the years that just don’t mesh with the new place.

Sure, chances are you received a few housewarming gifts from friends and family members. However, unless they got a psychic reading to nail your style, many of them probably missed the mark by a long shot in some cases.

When it comes to a new home, you want it to be personalized and reflect your style. Whether you’re renting or buying, you’re going to be there for a least a short while, so take the time to make it yours.

If you want to tweak up the new place with a bit of your personality, check out our tips.

The Entrance

A quick way to give your new home a personalized feel is to paint the front door. While you may want to paint the entire exterior, that’s a huge commitment and may take some time before it’s completed. If you want to upgrade the front door completely, adding a new pane of glass with a frosted or patterned design can add a new layer of personality. Companies like Beissel Windows & Siding can help with this and add new windows around the rest of the property. But painting is such a simple thing that can easily create a whole new feel. Painting the front door is quick and effective and gives you more bang for your buck.

A pro tip — since you’re painting it and you’ll likely change the locks as well, go ahead and add shiny new hinges and a stylish door knocker to complete the front door’s fresh new look.

The Entryway

Many of you will want to use the entryway walls for highlighting photos of loved ones. While that’s always a decent decoration and lets them all know you care about them, it really doesn’t give a home that “personalized” feel. To resolve that, don’t shy away from customizing the entryway.

If you’re a romantic or a history buff, consider mixing in some black and white historic wall photography and really add something that mirrors your style.

If movies are more your thing, hang a few collectibles on the wall or add a shelf and display a few nice pieces and arrange the family photos on the wall around it.

The Bedroom

You’re going to spend a LOT of time in the bedroom. Sure, you might be asleep for most of it, but the fact remains, it’ll be the most utilized room in the home. As such, there are a few things you should consider updating.

  • Add a touch of class with a new comforter that matches your personality and style. Do the same with a set of quality sheets.
  • Decorate the room with a couple of night-blooming plants that thrive indoors, such as Four O’Clocks or Night Blooming Cereus.
  • Don’t leave the windows with just the bare blinds. Since they come in a variety of styles and colors, curtains are a great way to personalize the bedroom.

The Kitchen

Adding a new faucet is both affordable and fairly simple to DIY. Just be sure that you either swap the hardware out at the same time or that you match the faucet with the existing hardware. You may be quite surprised by how big of an impact this simple change affects how your kitchen feels overall.

Another cheap change you can make is with the cabinetry. A coat or two of paint and swapping out the drawer and door handles and hinges with Design Theory Hardware more your style can easily give your kitchen that personalized touch.

Having the option to personalize the various parts of the house can definitely make it feel more like a “home.” Even if you’re renting and you aren’t able to make the more permanent changes, using the tips above can help you make it more you and not a place that you’re just residing in.
