As parents, we all want our kids to be as healthy as possible, and in most instances, we start teaching them positive habits that can make this the case from even an early age. Unfortunately, many of us approach these matters with a ‘do as I say, not as I do,’ mentality that means, despite preaching their benefits, we often miss out on implementing these crucial pointers ourselves.
Here, we’re going to help you get on top at last by considering the top health concerns that parents preach but overlook, and how you can make sure that you’re truly getting on top with each at last.
Teaching our kids to brush their teeth for at least two minutes twice a day is a priority for most parents as soon as the first flash of white breaks through those little gums. Unfortunately, as adults, we often brush for too short a time, fail to floss, or even skip dental appointments altogether. This is a large part of why individuals between 45-60+ are far more likely to experience tooth loss that sees them researching dentures cost when the kids are in bed. Make sure you’re not among them by practicing what you preach here by timing when you brush, flossing at least once a day, and also attending those six-monthly or annual dental appointments that you tell your kids they should never skip!
Obesity that now affects as many as 1 in 6 children across the US means that most parents actively encourage kids to eat their veg. Unfortunately, we rarely do the same, with busy parenting lifestyles making us more likely to pick up unhealthy sugary treats for a quick boost. This is a problem in our later years when high blood pressure and heart disease are already more likely. And, overcoming that risk is as simple as taking the time to sit down to eat healthy meals with the family instead of slaving over the washing up or some other task while everyone tucks in.
From sport lessons at school through to soccer in the backyard, we also encourage our kids to be as active as they can be as often as possible. This is crucial for both physical and mental health at any age. Unfortunately, you’ll never feel those benefits while watching the kids play outside from your usual spot on the sofa. By instead taking the time to play active games as a family, you both encourage your kids to engage that bit more, and help to keep your fitness levels at a much better standard without necessarily having to crack out the gym membership to make it happen.
It’s easy to prioritize the health of our kids, but an astounding amount of us entirely forget to do the same for ourselves. Enhance these lessons and enjoy the personal benefits they can bring by taking these steps towards practicing the health-based lessons that you preach at long last.
