With spring upon us and summer right around the corner, it is time to start getting our wardrobes ready for the warmer months. Short shorts, short skirts and short dresses are probably the first thing on your mind when it comes to summer. However, don’t make the mistake of not adding a midi skirt to your wardrobe. These skirts can be styled for just about any occasion and are a must have item for when the warmer months set in.
What is A Midi Skirt?
Midi skirts come in all different shapes and sizes, but what makes a skirt a midi is the length. Any skirt that sits below the knee but above the ankle is considered a midi skirt. While this particular length of skirt was considered conservative and best suited for older women for years, they have since outgrown that stigma. Celebrities, trendsetters, and fashionistas everywhere have been rocking this versatile look for just about any and every occasion.
With so many different styles, midi skirts look fantastic on a variety of body types. The standard high waistline and flowy bottom accentuate the smallest part of your waist while hiding the hip and lower stomach area. They are also easily dressed up or down with different tops and accessories. Because they are so flattering and versatile, they are often a staple in spring and summer wardrobes. Let’s take a look at some of the different styles so you can pick out a midi that will be a permanent fixture in your wardrobe for the warmer months.
Pleated: If your style is soft and romantic, then you need to invest in a pleated midi skirt. This style is light and airy and gives off a classically feminine vibe. We have been seeing pleated midi skirts in a variety of beautiful pastel shades which further adds to the dreamy look of these flowy skirts. Pair your pastel pleated midi with a tucked in white tee, sneakers, and a jean jacket for a more casual look. You can also dress this style up with a fitted tank, strappy heels, and some gold bracelets.
Pencil: A pencil midi is a must for the ladies who have a more formal wardrobe. While you can still dress this style down, it is definitely a more elegant look then some of the other styles. The pencil midi can be worn to the office, on a business lunch, or for after work drinks. They are also more form fitting then many of the other types of midis, so you’ll want to make sure you are pairing it with a shirt that can be tucked in discretely. We recommend trying this look with a silk button down as they will not be too bulky to tuck in and will fall nicely at the waist. Add a thin belt and a pair of formal heels and you’ve got a complete look.
A-line: The A-line midi skirt is one of the most recognizable styles and is the perfect fun and flirty look for spring and summer. These skirts are characterized by their fitted waistline that gradually widens toward the hem. This gives the skirt an ‘A’ shaped look, hence the name. Floral patterns are a favorite for A-line skirts, and they usually come in a wide range of color combinations. These skirts look best when paired with a fitted cropped tank that matches one of the accent colors on the skirt, and a pair of sandals or wedges.
High Slit: If you are new to midi skirts and unsure about how the length will work for you, try out a high slit midi skirt. This style will be on the shorter end for midis as they usually fall right below the knee. Then they will feature a high slit to your mid-thigh which will help show off more of your body. This style is also great for the shorter girls because you won’t have to worry about your shape getting lost in all the fabric. While still feminine, this skirt can be styled to be casual and sporty with the right accessories. We love seeing these skirts paired with a graphic tee or cropped tank and a pair of sneakers or combat boots.
Silk: The silk or satin midi has been trending lately, and we can easily see why. These gorgeous skirts are delicate and light and feature a relaxed fit that hugs your curves flawlessly. They are perfect for a night out when paired with a knit tank that features a high neckline, subtle gold jewelry, and a strappy heel. We’ve also seen silk midi skirts come with matching silk tops and, when they are worn together, the look is to die for.
No matter what your personal style is, there is the perfect midi skirt out there for you. If you don’t have one yet, now is the time to expand your wardrobe. So, get shopping and pick out a midi that you will be excited to rock all summer long.
