Car Safety Tips with the Kids

As a parent you want to do everything that you can to ensure your children’s safety at all times no matter what. That means ensuring that you are up-to-date with the latest car seat safety guidelines, ensuring that you know exactly your routes to a hospital from your house, and it can often be making sure that you are a driver so that you can get your children where they need to be and when they need to be there.

We spend tons of time looking into car seats and their safety, but there are lots of hidden hazards that you need to be aware of. Some of these hazards are obvious and some not so much. For example, you may have a Houdini sitting in the backseat who can unclip the car seat when you are on the motorway. This will lead you to needing the advice of a car accident lawyer for sure. Safety is important and as a parent you have to get as educated as you hope your children to be. Here are some cool safety tips to take on board with children with you when you are driving.

  • Avoid allowing children to eat in the car. Every single parent has a joke about their car being crumb city, with most of the crumbs embedded in the backseats. If you avoid letting your children in the car, you’re going to insure that your car is not going to be pulled over in an emergency because one of your children is choking. If you are driving you cannot be turning around and putting your child on the back to dislodge something stuck. If you make sure that you only rely on soft snacks such as applesauce or yogurt, your children will be able to eat safely and you won’t have to panic.
  • Drill in hand holding. Some things never change and this is a safety tip that will never go out of style. When you are driving your children around, you need to ensure that you are holding their hands everywhere including in the car park. As soon as you have parked up, get yourself out of the vehicle before you unlock the back doors of your car. This way, you don’t have to worry about your children hopping out and running across the car park while you are still trying to get out of your seat belt.
  • Always, always check the back seat. We see so many children dying every day of the heat killer – vehicular hyperthermia. This is a heat stroke that results from unintentionally leaving children in hot cars. You might think that this is impossible, that the parent must be negligent to have done this in the first place, the exhaustion, a busy mind, a change in routine – all of these can be reasons for this happening.
  • Speak to a car seat safety expert. If you have children who need car seats make sure that they are installed properly. Yes, they come with instructions to help you to do this at home, it’s always better to get them installed properly.
