7 Tips For Maintaining Your Home

Homes are so important – it’s where you spend such a lot of your time. It’s (usually) where your family lives and where you raise children. When you first buy your home, you may be extra careful to make sure that everything is cared for and maintained properly. But what can happen over time is that standards slip, you forget to patch things up, and next thing you know, certain areas of your house can start to look tired or in need of a fix-up. To stop that happening to you – or to remedy what has already happened to your home – check out this list of 10 home maintenance tips that will keep your home looking beautiful and cared for.

1. Give the garden a refresh

Watering and weeding can seem like hard work if you’re not naturally green-fingered, but there’s so much joy to be taken from a well-cared-for garden. Take a look at the surroundings with a critical eye and replace or update areas that need it, for example, make sure fences are in good working order and that the letterbox is neat and clean.

Top tip: check the guttering around your home at least once a year and clear away any dead leaves that may cause blockages.

2. Don’t forget the drains

You need to regularly check your drains to make sure they’re not getting clogged with hair, food, or other detritus. Clogged drains are at best unpleasant, and at worse, they can cause larger issues and leave rooms smelling bad – which is not ideal. If you do find that they’re blocked or you suspect they’re blocked as they’re running more slowly than usual, then you can use a combination of household products (baking soda and vinegar) to clear the drain. Just pour them down the drain, and flush the drain with boiling water after 15 minutes.

3. Keep an eye on your roof

Proper roofing is absolutely vital to your home, so making sure that it’s not damaged or in a bad condition is crucial. It can be hard to check this yourself, so you hire a company to roof inspections with a drone. This clever trick means that you can keep your two feet on safe, solid ground and a professional can check all the way around to make sure that everything’s in order.

4. Re-paint your home

The exterior of your home gets battered from the elements and it might be a long time since it was painted. Take a look and see if it needs repainting – it’s incredible what a difference it can make to the look of your house. Don’t forget the window frames – it’s common for them to get old and the paint to chip away. Luckily, painting is a relatively cheap way to completely refresh your home, so it’s a great way to make big changes on a budget.

5. Check your alarms

Make sure to keep yourself and your family safe by checking the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors every month. These devices may save your life, so it’s absolutely vital that you make sure they’re in good working order. If they’re broken, then make sure to replace them quickly and if their batteries are dead, then replace them.

6. Get dusting and cleaning

Giving the house a proper dust and clean down every now and then will help the place to look and feel much fresher. Pull all of your furniture away from the walls and dust and clean behind and underneath, vacuum in the corners, and wash down the walls. Not only is this good for general cleanliness, it also reduces the chance of pest infestations such as clothes moths which can be utterly devastating for your home, your carpets, and your clothes. Starting with house cleaning services in Leland, NC is a good starting point or find a similar company in your local area.

7. Check the heating systems

This is vital, as you will need to use the heating closer to winter and so you want to make sure it’s functional before you need it. In this current energy crisis, it’s more important than ever for your system to work well and efficiently, so do all your can for your heating system to make sure it’s working properly. That may mean bleeding your radiators to remove hair or cleaning out the heat pump. Either way, make sure to keep on top of it to keep your bills down!

Hopefully, this list has given you some food for thought and inspiration as to what you can do in your home to keep it in tip-top condition.
