How to Support an Anxiety Student

The following techniques can be used to reduce children’s anxiety.

Encourage your students to employ self-calming or anxiety-reduction strategies they have acquired from a therapist.

Building in “call home” breaks can be beneficial for students who struggle with separation anxiety. Encourage a kid experiencing anxiety to seek assistance from a certified staff member with expertise in mental health. 

  1. Relaxation Techniques for Anxiety Students

Although anxiety doesn’t always affect a student’s academic performance, it can have a negative effect on how well they learn in a classroom. The great news is that parents and teachers may collaborate to support a child’s success. Teachers can use a variety of anxiety-relieving techniques to help anxious kids cope with the demands of the school day. Remember that depending on the circumstance, anxiety management techniques for elementary school children may be different from those for middle school or high school students.

  1. Deep Inhalation

An activity that involves deep breathing can be quite beneficial when you detect that some or all of your students are feeling anxious. Daily deep breathing, especially while children are quiet, aids in teaching. The breathing process can be slowed down to help the brain relax. When students are under stress, deep breathing exercises can lower their heart rates and help them control their body’s reaction to their anxiety.

  1. Balloon Breathing

It’s a simple activity. Request your student to close his eyes and visualize inflating a balloon. Ask him to select the balloon’s color and warn him that if he blows too forcefully or quickly, the balloon will burst out of his mouth. To blow up the balloon, he must inhale carefully and exhale slowly. Tell him to take a breath in for a count of 3 or 4, hold for a count of three or four, and then let out a count of three or four into his balloon. Follow this drill three times. Last but not least, have your student “write” one fear on his balloon before letting it float away into the sky.

  1. Self-Talk

By rephrasing their thoughts and utilizing self-talk to feel good and more in control, children can eventually learn how to control their fears and anxiety. One such tactic is to have your student practice telling himself encouraging things, like, “You do not control me, I can handle this! “Assist him in writing targeted scripts to combat particular anxiety triggers.

  1. Practice being mindful

As a beneficial mindfulness activity, stretching exercises can be done between classes or during short breaks in the lesson. This method of relaxation can lessen tension and anxiety. Another quick and efficient way to reduce your students’ nervousness is counting. Ask your kid to locate a calm, comfortable sitting spot, close his eyes, and count slowly to ten when anxiety overwhelms him. Then, count with him again to twenty or a greater number.

  1. Monsters of worry

One who consumes anxiety is known as a worry monster. Unique toys are available, or you can create something yourself with a fastening “mouth.” Kids can write their worries on a scrap of paper and give them to the worrying monster.

Other times, the youngster may also want to speak about what is upsetting them. Sometimes, just the task of writing the fear down and getting rid of it is enough. You will have to come to an agreement on how to have the kids signal this. The approach is as practical when using a box for anxieties, which can be more appealing to older kids.
