How Scroll Pumps Work

Scroll pumps are simple in design but powerful in use. They can be applied in any kind of industrial or commercial work and used to pump liquids or air. These pumps put out a lot of force which makes them well suited for moving liquids, gasses, slurries and even solids.

Scroll pumps are usually available in various sizes, capacities and working pressures depending on their purpose and use. Read on to find out how these pumps work.

Two Scrolls

A scroll pump consists of two spiral pieces called scrolls. One scroll is fixed, while the other moves around it, meshing with the stationary scroll. The scrolls are made from a hollowed-out piece of metal and have crescent-shaped grooves.

In most cases, scroll pumps are manufactured from steel or aluminum tubing that’s been drilled with holes for the crescent-shaped grooves. The ends of each scroll can be connected by means of bolts or screws.

The grooves are cut so that the spiral cuts into the internal cavity of the opposite scroll to create a series of pockets. When you turn on your pump, it makes these pockets expand and contract, creating an opening in which fluid can flow through.

When the scroll pumps are placed into a housing, the two scrolls are placed into a housing. Mating members prevent the scrolls from moving apart. Pumps can be driven by an eccentrically mounted motor or by an air driven motor.

Operation

To operate the pump, both scrolls move in opposite directions while they remain locked into place. This creates an area of trapped gas which seems to expand as the volume increases during one part of the cycle and contracts during another part of the cycle. This movement creates a flow which pulls gas through the inlet port and pushes it through the outlet port.

The general principle behind scroll pumps is that as one side moves up relative to another, so does their relative distance from each other within that chamber or manifold where they are moving together. This creates a vacuum or negative pressure inside those chambers which causes fluid flow from inlet ports into output ports when activated by applying power via electric motors.

When you think about how scroll pumps work, you might think of them as being similar to ball bearings or bearing blocks, both of which have small cups that fit into channels within their housings. These cups allow the pistons inside each scroll to move freely up and down when pressure is applied on them by their seals through rubber O-rings or glass fiber packing materials.

Things To Consider Before Purchasing a Scroll Pump

Consider the following factors before owning a scroll pump.

  • Warranty. Make sure the scroll pump has a warranty. This will come in handy if it experiences an issue shortly after purchasing it.
  • Size. Before buying a scroll pump, it is important that you decide on its size because different sizes have different capacities and functions.
  • Technical Support. Scroll pumps need regular maintenance if they are going to last longer than usual. It is important for you to have a qualified technician who will be in charge of the maintenance.
  • Where will the scroll pump be placed? This can make a big difference in terms of efficiency and performance, so it is important that you think about where exactly it will be placed.

Safety Tips

When you are operating a scroll pump, the most important thing is to pay attention to the details of the operation. Pay attention to the following:

  1. When starting up the machine, pay attention to whether there is a problem in the hydraulic system. Look for a leakage and make adjustments on line before starting up.
  2. It is necessary to check for defects on the machine itself. For example, if there is any damage on the piston rod or if the guide plate has been damaged and cannot be used properly. In this case, it must be repaired immediately so that no damage occurs during production work.
  3. Check whether there are any problems within the production line or the management system. Then, you need to find out what causes these problems and how they can be solved quickly and efficiently.

Although they may not seem like it, scroll pumps are one of the most important types of fluid pumps. They are used in many different industries to transfer liquids and gasses from one place to another. A scroll pump can be used for any application where a liquid needs to move through an internal channel or pipe system.
