4 Tips for Moving with Kids

I have been with my husband for almost 20 years now and in those years we have lived in three houses. Each house was totally different and we had to make do with what we had and where to put it. Moving from my college apartment to our first house was super easy as everything fit in our cars and my dads trailer attached to his truck. We drove it all the 1-hour distance to our first house and then bought new furniture which was delivered from the store. Super easy. Moving from that house though to our second house was a little harder. We had a 1-year old and we were moving from a ranch to a 2-story house, and it was a house we didn’t even want to move into. We had bought a house to rehab and resell and the housing market crashed so we had to move into it since it wouldn’t sell and our other house was easier to sell.

Moving to our second house was easier because we had a lot of family help and we rented a pod which we loaded in our driveway and it was delivered to our new house. We were younger as well so it was a little easier for us as well.

Moving to our third house was a lot harder! We had a 2.5-year-old and a 1-year-old plus it was a 2-story house with bedrooms on the top floor and furniture in the basement as well. We hired movers this time! My husband carried as much as he could to the garage to make it easier and quicker for the movers since we were paying by the hour for movers. It also made it easier to see the stuff slowly clear out the house and actually purge before moving.

Since I feel like an expert here are my moving tips with kids:

As soon as you decide to move, start packing! I packed slowly so I could purge as much as I could before we moved and stay organized. Some people wait until the move and unpack to purge but I found it was easier to pack less and therefore put away less. If you wait until too late then you end up tossing everything in a box and it will be a mess to unpack.

Hire movers! I remember reading a meme that said once you hit 30 your friends don’t want to break their backs and waste a weekend day to help you move in exchange for some beer and pizza. We lucked out with a great moving company after lots of research and reviews. Splurge for furniture assembly movers which will put your furniture together for you. I initially thought we would do this ourselves as we were on a budget but after issues with closing, I ended up meeting the movers here and directing them to where to put stuff. It was late already and my husband was stressed so I knew that it was worth adding the furniture assembly last minute.

Pack essentials in your cars as you never know what could happen with moving trucks. I have heard horror stories of movers being late or worse yet disappearing. We actually almost missed out on our movers because they had to deliver the furniture and boxes by a certain time that night or we had to wait until 2 days later and pay a storage fee because they were booked up. We luckily had our essentials for our kids and sleeping that night in my van just in case.
