4 Rainy Day Safety Tips for Children’s Health

Ensuring your kids get enough vitamin D during the dreary winter months can be a challenge. However, playing outside when the sun comes out and investing in new baby bundles can make a difference. Of course, you must take some precautions, as spending time in the cold can have repercussions.

Can My Child Play Outside During the Rainy Months?

It’s safe for kids to play outside during rainy season. However, the wet weather and low temperatures come with risks:

  • Frostbite
  • Hyperthermia
  • Getting sick

The good news is that you can avoid these issues by adhering to some essential safety tips.

Preparing To Send Your Children Out for Rain Play

Parents should always check the forecast before sending kids outside — if it’s snowing heavily or the temperature is below freezing, kids should stay inside. If you’ve deemed it safe for your child, use these five tips to minimize the risk of harm.

1. Know the Warning Signs

Frostbite and hyperthermia can sneak up on children, so parents should be vigilant about checking for warning signs. If you notice any of the following, get your kids somewhere warm:

  • Clumsiness
  • Prickling feeling in fingers, toes or ears
  • Waxy look to the skin
  • Discolored skin
  • Slurred speech
  • Low energy
  • Violent shivering

Once you get your children inside, take their temperatures. Any reading under 95 degrees is dangerous and requires immediate medical attention.

3. Get A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleepy time spray and other sleep enhancers may support the immune system. Ensuring your child get’s a full night sleep before they play in the rain may give them a lesser chance of catching a cold. 

4. Hydrate

Physical activity means a lot of sweating — even when it’s chilly outside. In fact, kids will probably warm up quickly under their heavy winter clothes. As a result, parents should regularly remind their kids to drink water to avoid dehydration. Remember that while hot cocoa is warming and delicious, it contains a lot of sugar, so kids will also need water after playing. 

5. Layer Clothing

The best way to keep kids warm is to layer clothing. That way, they can remove outer clothing if they get too warm while maintaining their core temperatures. Additionally, all children should wear appropriate accessories:

  • Mittens and gloves
  • Scarves
  • Snow boots
  • Hats
