5 Important Things to do When Moving to a New Home

Moving to a new home can be exciting. It can be the catalyst for beginnings and somewhere new to create precious memories. However, moving home is also one of the top five most stressful events in a person’s life.

You can limit any stress by being as prepared as possible. Before moving to a new home, there are certain things you’ll need to do. Take a look at this simple list.

Child Proof

If you’re moving home with young children, you’ll want to childproof your new home as soon as possible. When your new home is childproof, you’ll be able to get on with your other tasks without worrying about your child being hurt if you take your eyes off him.

It can help to take a box of things you need to childproof your home over to your new property before you move anything else in. Items like stair gates or socket covers will be essential.

Do a Walk Through

Before moving everything from your current home to your new home, do a walk through. This is especially important if the property is old and has been empty for some time. You may find that when people move out, unwanted pests move in. Always look for a reputable pest control and let them do all the checking for you. Check their website here.

Look through your property for any signs of damage. Be sure to check the attic, basement, and garden too. Rats can be a common pest in gardens or outdoor crevices. If you notice signs of rats, like rat droppings, call a rat removal company immediately.

Set Up Utilities

The last thing you want to do is move to a new home just to find you don’t have heat or hot water. Before heading to your new property, make sure to set up all of your utilities so you know you have essentials without being charged extortionate prices because you aren’t officially a customer.

If you’re moving with children, this will be especially important. You’ll need electricity and gas to cook meals and keep everyone warm after a long day of moving in.

Deep Clean

Whether it’s a brand new or old property, you’ll need to deep clean before moving all your belongings in. It’s likely that some mess has been left behind by builders or previous owners so it can help to get everything clear before you start loading the house with boxes.

However, cleaning before entering a new house is also good for your health. If anyone in your family has allergies, getting as much of the dirt and dust out of your house will help to ensure allergies aren’t triggered when you arrive.

Know Where Everything Is

Do you know where the fuse box is? What about the fire alarm? Knowing where everything is before your first night in a new property is essential.

If the fire alarm sounds because you burn your toast in the morning, you’re going to need to know where it is and how to turn it off.
