Kitchen Trends to Keep in Mind for Your Next Upgrade

While kitchen updates might not be the cheapest or the easiest home improvement projects to take on, the benefits they provide make the time, effort and money investment worth it. Apart from enhancing the functionality and look of a room that is usually referred to as the heart of the home, these upgrades can also boost the value of your property considerably, should you decide to put it on the market at some point in the near future.

This leaves you with a lot of choices and decisions you have to make since there’s a wide range of elements to factor in, from countertops and cabinets to colour schemes and appliances. The options and possibilities are virtually endless when it comes to kitchen makeovers. But in the end, the purpose is to create a space that looks good and suits your personal needs, while also making sure it could appeal to other people in case you want to sell your house.

This means you might want to steer clear from styles that are too bold or unusual as they could scare away potential buyers. That’s why it’s a good idea to stay up to date with the latest design trends if you’re thinking about giving your kitchen a bit of a refresh and bringing it into the present. A contemporary look that most people would appreciate is bound to breathe new life into your home and help you get the most bang for your buck.

So, let’s check out the kitchen trends and styles that are either dominating the interior design space at the moment or are going to be big in the future.

Colourful cabinets

While white kitchens have always been praised for their clean and elegant look and timeless quality, their allure is not as strong as it once was. These days, we’re witnessing a renaissance of colourful kitchens, already noticeable since 2022, as many people are moving towards more vivid and cheerful designs.

So, if you want to add a bit of interest to a simple shaker kitchen, blue and green remain highly popular colour palettes for kitchens, going from lighter shades like powder blue, turquoise or sage all the way to darker tones such as midnight blue or emerald. However, we’re also seeing a lot of pinks and warm hues like brown and burgundy making an appearance. Colour choice is extremely important in kitchen design, so you have to figure out which nuances work best for your space and how they will stand the test of time.

Biophilic design

Biophilic design has been around for quite a while now but its presence in the kitchen space is getting more notable by the day. So, what exactly is this concept and how does it integrate into kitchen design? Biophilic design proposes the idea of using natural elements directly or indirectly when designing living spaces in order to enhance the occupants’ connection with the natural environment.

Basically, it all revolves around embracing nature in every shape and form to create spaces that focus on health and well-being, nurturing the spirit and invigorating the senses. So, it’s not just about increasing the number of plants in your kitchen, be it decorative greens or edible plants, although that’s a good starting point. Biophilic design extends to other areas like the materials you use in designing your kitchen, incorporating natural lighting and ventilation, creating a seamless transition to the outdoors, and so on.

Floating open shelves

The idea of open shelving has been sparking heated design debates for as long as we can remember, and the jury is still out deliberating on the topic. The advantages are just as hard to deny as the downsides, so most designers refuse to take a clear stand in this respect, arguing that it’s mostly a matter of personal preference.

Well, we can’t tell you what to do, but we can tell you that the balance is tilting in favour of open shelving trend-wise, and it’s easy to see why. A kitchen that is filled with closed cabinets from floor to ceiling can feel quite heavy and closed off. Installing floating open shelves can break the monotony of cabinet walls and create a more relaxed and airy ambience. Besides, open shelves provide accessibility and allow you to put your favourite cookware or décor items on display.

Extra storage

A room that serves multiple purposes like the kitchen can always do with some extra storage space. So, you’ll be happy to know that the latest design trends have been focusing on making kitchens more functional and easier to use by incorporating intelligent storage solutions.

You have the possibility to enhance your existing storage space with drawer dividers and cabinet organisers that can help you keep all your tools and utensils in order or hide them behind closed doors where no one can see the mess. Another interesting option is creating an annexe like a utility room or pantry if space allows, so you can keep your kitchen tidy and organised.

Metallic touches

There are many ways to add some interest and visual appeal to your kitchen when the space feels a bit dull, and it seems like the go-to option right now is using metallics. Fixtures or hardware made of polished brass or nickel are perfect if you want to bring a sparkle, quite literally, to your room. Stainless steel or bronze are also great alternatives to consider. Also, don’t be afraid to mix different materials and finishes but make sure you don’t go overboard either. Balance is key in creating a cohesive and streamlined look for any space, kitchens included.

It’s certainly not easy to keep up with all the styles and innovative ideas that designers come up with every year. Nevertheless, design trends are definitely an aspect you should keep an eye on if you want to give your kitchen a much-deserved refresh and enjoy all the perks that these types of projects provide. So you can use these style suggestions as guidance and complete them with your own research.
