Maximize Efficiency: The Ultimate HVAC Maintenance Guide

Have you noticed that your power bills seem to creep up in the winter and summer and then level off a bit in the spring and fall? There’s a good reason for that. Heating and cooling systems are the main sources of energy consumption in our homes these days. In some cases, they use as much energy as all other appliances, devices, and fixtures combined. Besides that, the harder they have to work to combat outdoor temperatures, the more they cost to operate.

For many homeowners, though, that high cost of heating and cooling doesn’t level off quite as much as it should when the weather is milder. Instead, it continues to climb and even gets worse over time. That’s because their HVAC systems aren’t working as efficiently as they could be. If you’re experiencing that problem yourself and interested in reversing it, or you’d like to avoid it altogether, keeping your HVAC well maintained is the key to success.

Important Aspects of HVAC Maintenance

Several factors come into play with HVAC maintenance. All of them come together to keep your HVAC system working more effectively and efficiently. They can also reduce breakdowns and repair costs and make your system last longer. Take a look at some of the most important aspects of routine maintenance.

Timing

First of all let’s discuss timing. It’s best to have your HVAC system inspected and serviced at least twice a year, preferably in the spring and fall. Those are the times when you need the system the least. They’re also the perfect times to catch small problems before they get out of hand and cause a full-blown malfunction. Having maintenance performed during off-peak seasons will ensure the system is ready to keep you comfortable when you need it most.

Inspecting the HVAC System

During routine maintenance, one of the measures technicians take is inspecting the system to look for signs of wear, damage, and other issues. If they find them, they’ll take care of them so they won’t become major problems later on. They cover the entire system to make sure no stone is left unturned.

Cleaning the Units

Cleaning the heating and air conditioning units is also an important part of HVAC maintenance. Dirt and debris can build up on and in the system over time, and they’ll detract from its efficiency. They can also impact your indoor air quality. With that being the case, it’s important to remove buildup inside the units and any debris that may be clinging to the outside of them as well. Cleaning the evaporator coils, condenser, drain lines, and other components is crucial for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

Changing Filters

Changing filters is yet another crucial factor in HVAC maintenance. Filters protect your family as well as your heating and air conditioning system by trapping dirt, debris, and other contaminants that would otherwise keep traveling through the system and your home. Once they get clogged, though, they can cause more problems than they prevent. Changing the filters at least every three months is recommended.

Ductwork Maintenance

Ductwork maintenance is equally essential. Pet hair, pollen, dirt, and other debris accumulate in your ductwork over time. When they do, they can interfere with your HVAC system’s effectiveness and efficiency. They also detract from indoor air quality. At the same time, your ductwork can sustain damage from animals, storms, and normal wear and tear. That damage leaves an opening for moisture, mold, and other problems. Keeping it in good repair will improve your HVAC system’s performance.

Keeping Your HVAC System Working Properly

Those are some of the most important aspects of HVAC maintenance, but several other factors also come into play. Professional HVAC technicians cover them all. Through routine inspections and tune-ups, they can keep your system working properly and efficiently for years to come, and they can help reduce repair and replacement costs along the way.
