You don’t have to have a design background or a background in DIY to be able to put a room together for your child. The best thing to know about DIY redecorating for your child’s bedroom is that you have full creative control. You don’t have to be an interior designer to curate something playful, practical, and fantastic looking in your child’s bedroom. For example, you don’t have to have it looking cutesy and delicate for a baby any more than you have to have it looking bold for a teenager.
There are so many ways that you can redecorate your child’s bedroom to make it stand out. For example, space wallpaper is brilliant for kids rooms, but so is Barbie! No matter what you choose for your child, get your child involved in the decision making about their bedroom because after all, they’re the ones that are going to have to sleep in it.
2025 can absolutely be the year that you redesign your child’s bedroom, so let’s take a look at some of the best ideas to get you started up.
- Start with something neutral. At its base, you want to start with a neutral colour that your kids can grow up with. Space wallpaper, as we mentioned earlier, is fantastic for a kids bedroom, but you might choose to put it on one feature wall rather than paint the entire bedroom in it. Having a neutral base for your child’s bedroom means that you can swap out the decor, the decals and any murals as they get older without having to repaint the walls every single time. It acts as a blank canvas for their evolving tastes and that is definitely going to come in handy when they go from toddler to teenager in no time.
- Choose to begin with something understated, as we said about starting with something neutral. If you go the wallpaper route instead of paper, opt for an understated print, but then use decals to jazz it up. You can take so much inspiration from choosing a neutral base because of the fact that you could change everything else. This keeps the wall protected so that you can have something neutral on most of the walls and then stick that space themed or Barbie themed wallpaper on one.
- Make a statement with the ceiling. In 2025 we want to incorporate every area of your child’s bedroom, so rather than going all in, opted to make the statement by installing wallpaper on just the ceiling space wallpaper and glow in the dark stars can make that space theme really stand out. You don’t have to have the room overlooking the juvenile territory with fairy dust if you don’t want to, but there are so many spaces that you can choose a print that is appropriate for a toddler and then appropriate for a teenager. The best part is that the statement that you make on the ceiling, such as wallpaper, can be easily removed.
- Look at built in storage. A great option for redecorating your child’s bedroom is to take out all of the loose furniture and look at built in options. Loose furniture for a toddler is probably not the best idea, and you need to anchor it to the wall anyway. So if you can invest in some built-in storage, you’ll be able to get the shelving and the storage that you need without having to worry about a child pulling it down on top of themselves.
- Invest in a full bed. Children may be small, but they don’t necessarily have to have a single bed in their bedroom. If the space allows, skip the single bed and go for a full size queen or king bed. As soon as they outgrow the crib, not only will they have more rolling space, but this is going to be the bed that they can grow into and you will only have to really replace the mattress every few years.
- Choose multipurpose furniture. Bookcases that open up into desk spaces and coffee tables that do double duty as storage boxes are great for kids’ bedrooms because kids have a lot of stuff. Day beds that do double duty as a sofa for example with rearranging of pillows can really make a big difference to their hangout space. You want this bedroom to be a sanctuary, a peaceful place for your children to relax, but it’s so much easier to do that when they have enough room and storage in their rooms.
- Invest properly in the foundational pieces. There are some furnishings, such as a changing table that have an expiration date. You can instead use a dresser that will be Evergreen and use a changing pad on top of the dresser as a changing station. Once they grow out of diapers, you can take the changing pad and any of the diapers away and then you’ve still got a fully functioning chest of drawers.
- Be classic in your linen choices. The fun part about decorating a kids bedroom is that you can elevate it with colour. Whatever your kid is into, choose linens that match so that whatever you’ve put on the walls can be matched with the linens too. You can do this across curtains, blinds and cushions and not just duvets.
- The art choices that you make. If you’re putting the wallpaper on the walls, you may want to rethink your art choices. You don’t want to have the room look too busy or too loud, with messy drawings or too much color. So make art choices that make sense, adorning your kids walls with artwork that is chic, they could even use the artwork to decorate their first apartment one day.
- Don’t go for kids sizes. It’s tempting to go for miniature pieces of furniture or beds because children are themselves small. If you choose full size furniture pieces, you can bet that they’re going to grow into them and one day could take it away with them. It’s very tempting to go for those miniature child sized chairs, but they don’t last very long and you’ll have to spend more money to replace them.
