Checking Out Cirque du Soleil: OVO

I honestly have seen so many Cirque du Soleil shows and yet I never get tired of them. They are such amazing pieces of art that keep you engaged from start to finish. I am always amazed at the costumes, storylines and acrobatic feats. OVO is the newest show by Cirque to come to the Chicagoland area but it will be traveling all over the country.

Cirque du Soleil: OVO is a story about bugs and nature. OVO, which is Portuguese for “egg”, is all about insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Made up of 100 people from 25 different countries, including 53 artists, OVO showcases high-level acrobatic acts that redefine the limits of the human
body.

The show runs about two-hours with a 20-minute intermission. Just like all the Cirque shows there is constantly something going on so no matter where you look or sit there is something to watch. Each act is different and is similar to what you’d expect at a “circus” but so much more. I was holding my breath so parts of the acts and I didn’t even realize it! Every performer though was flawless and kept us on our edges of our seats! The stage itself is also a work of art that has a great crew on top of constantly changing it for the next act.

SOME FACTS:

• A brand new stage and acrobatic structure has been built for the 2024 reopening.
• The backdrop wall measures 19.5 meters wide by 9 meters high.
• The massive inflatable egg measures 8.5 meters by 6 meters in height.
• The acrobatic structure is located 14 meters above the ground and weighs over 1000 kilograms.
• The initial cricket costumes required 75 hours of work each because of their complexity and the need to give them rigidity while maintaining the flexibility and expandability of the material.
• The 7-piece band includes a bandleader/drummer, bass and double bass player, percussionist, violinist, wind instruments player, keyboard player, guitarist, plus one singer..
• The music is performed live to adapt to what is happening on the stage.
