I just received the book, The American Patriot’s Almanac, to review and I have to say I love it. Now I am by no means a history person, actually history was my least favorite subject as I figured it was in the past and that’s where it should stay. I was pleasantly surprised with how interesting and addicting this book is.
First, I want to tell you how nice the outside is. It is a thick, durable, hardcover book which embossed writing, a vintage color yellow cover with a red cloth binding. The pages are also cut so they are uneven giving the book a vintage look. The book is 515 pages and filled with so much I could not put it down. It is also a heavy book that would compliment any book shelf.
The American Patriot’s Almanac is an almanac so it is not really a book you would sit down and read front to back, but rather use it as a reference book. It is set up so each page features January 1st all the way through December 31st, so all 365 days are covered. Each page has a few paragraphs about what significant happened that day and then has a small time line of years and what happened in that particular year on that particular date you are looking at.
I loved looked up birthdays and important dates to me and seeing what historically corresponded. For example, when I go to January 26th, the day my son was born, “Michigan becomes the 26th state” and “Benjamin Franklin writes to his daughter that the turkey would be a better national symbol than the bald eagle.” There is usually about 5 facts per date and also a short group of paragraphs about a more significant event.
Everything is in this book and it is set up in such a way that it is not boring and makes history fun. This would be a great reference book for anyone, especially teachers or homeschooling parents. I love it though for my personal reference and I feel that it keep me a sense of American pride as I learn more and more about our country. It also is very reasonably priced at Amazon.com.
