I am not much of a romance reader, but this book was just too funny! Called “an offbeat love story” the book “Benny & Shrimp” by Katarina Mazetti is truly an adorable tale of two middle-aged misfits. Let me explain more though, because you may be confused.
So first we have Benny, a Swedish country farmer in his 30’s, who has 24 milk cows and their babies plus a few sheep. He is boring, plain and has just lost his mother. He is looking for a country girl to marry and come home to.
Next, we have Shrimp, who is a 30-something vegetarian Swedish librarian, who is mourning her husband. She is a clean freak and very organized.
One day as they are both visiting their loved ones in the cemetery, Benny and Shrimp meet. It was far from love at first site as they are both grieving, but then again they are also lonely and end up leaning on each other. As intelligent and caring people, they realize that love comes in all shapes and sizes.
Throughout the book, Benny and Shrimp take turns telling the story from their own perspective, which I loved because it spiced up the book. It is nice to see what the other characters are thinking and feeling. Because of this somewhat jumping around, you can’t skip around in this book, but it is so good so you will want to read it from front to back.
The book really kept me reading and wanting to know more. With the characters being so different, it was comforting to see their love grow. I loved how this book was a nice and refreshing break from my typical mystery novels and it was not a gushy, romantic romance novel. I could relate to certain aspects of the characters and how the feel.
As an International Bestseller already, Benny and Shrimp was just released in the U.S. on July 28th.
