So I admit it, parenting books do not interest me. I hate being told by others how to raise my children or listening to other un-solicited advice on parenting; however, we (us parents) could all use a little (or a lot) help now and then. I know I often feel like I am the only mom going through things, such as my toddler not sleeping through the night, watching too much tv, not talking, and my sons fighting. I scour the Internet looking though message boards, forums, and other areas where I can read advice and ask questions.
You see I have no friends really that have kids and things are so different since my parents had kids and other relatives, that now their suggestions are outdated and no longer proper procedure. Today’s world is also different because of all the technology and science we have now and other factors that we have to consider.
So anyways, when I heard about “NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children” by Po Bronson (New York Times Bestselling Author) & Ashely Merryman, I was at first like “Oh great another parenting book.” But then when I got the opportunity to review it, I decided to give it a shot and see if I could learn something. Well the book is great and insightful and nothing like the other parenting books I have browsed through.
NurtureShock is a book about the “Science of Parenting.” It covers self-esteem, racial differences, emotional intelligence, educational cartoons, obesity, peer pressure and so much more! Covering aspects from tots to teens, NurtureShock is a great book for any parent and it is organized in chapters to cover certain issues, so you can read what issues interest you.
I found basically all the chapters interesting. I did have two favorites though involving a child being gifted and racial acceptance. Basically Bronson and Merryman use scientific research to explain why some things work and others don’t. Now I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and there is research to contradict everything, but it doesn’t hurt to listen to someone’s else’s thoughts and ideas. Since all kids, parents, and environments are different, we all need something different. Nurtureshock was a refreshing parenting book and I recommend it for anyone who either loves parenting books or is the anti-parent book raiser like me!
From the Publisher:
In a world of modern, involved, caring parents, why are so many kids aggressive and cruel? Where is intelligence hidden in the brain, and why does that matter? Why do cross-racial friendships decrease in schools that are more integrated? If 98% of kids think lying is morally wrong, then why do 98% of kids lie? What’s the single most important thing that helps infants learn language?
NurtureShock is a groundbreaking collaboration between award-winning science journalists Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. They argue that when it comes to children, we’ve mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razor-sharp analysis, they demonstrate that many of modern society’s strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring–because key twists in the science have been overlooked.
