I always have good intentions when I buy fruit and vegetables, but week after week I am throwing it away. I always buy too much, it gets lost in our fridge, or it rots much faster that I wanted it to! I am not alone either as according to the New York Times, “A family of four will throw out an average of 24 lbs. of fruits and vegetables per month.” Well now thanks to Peak Fresh, I am able to buy fruits and vegetables, herbs (even flowers) and store them longer knowing they will stay fresh. Peak Fresh actually doubles the existing storage life. Peak Fresh are actually the bags used commercially by some of the world’s top fruit and vegetable growers.
How Peak Fresh Works:
* Removes ethylene gas – This is what accelerates aging and rotting.
* Breathing – Allows food to breathe while gas is being removed.
* Minimizes moisture – The bags contain an anti-fogging treatment to minimize moisture and bacteria growth.
When I read about produce releasing gas, I was confused and didn’t really understand it. So I found this great explanation off the Peak Fresh website:
Take, for example, humans. When they exert themselves in exercise or it is a hot day, they breathe in and out more quickly, which, if continued, ultimately leads to exhaustion and dehydration (water loss) and then death. Exactly the same process happens with produce, which is why refrigeration is so important. When produce gets hot, the respiration and transpiration rates rise dramatically with significant dehydration, which ultimately leads the produce to an early death. Hot produce causes stress, which encourages increased production of ethylene and water loss through elevated transpiration.
I received a pack of these and I have had great results. I also love that you can wash and dry the bags to re-use up to two months. There were a few aspects I didn’t like though, such as the produce has to be dry before you place it in the bag, you need separate bags for different produce, and warm fruit and vegetables should be placed in the refrigerator to cool before placing in the bag. Otherwise, once you get used to using the bags, it is no big deal.
If you are clueless as to produce life and storage, Peak Fresh has a Storage Guide list for over 40 different fruits and vegetables. I learned what to avoid storing certain items next too (For example, avoid storing cucumbers by apples and pears.) I especially love the Peak Fresh bags for celery (it can last up to 10 weeks – not that it would last that long in our house!) and green onions can be stored 3-4 weeks. I worry mainly about storing vegetables, because I buy those for dinner and then dinner plans change and I end up not using the produce. Fruits get eaten pretty fast around here so I haven’t tried the Peak Fresh bags with fruit yet.
