ABOUT THE BOOK:
Meet Kathryn Borel, bon vivant and undutiful daughter. Now meet her father, Philippe, former chef, eccentric genius, and wine aficionado extraordinaire. Kathryn is like her father in every way but one: she’s totally ignorant when it comes to wine. And although Philippe has devoted untold parenting hours to delivering impassioned oenological orations, she has managed to remain unenlightened. But after an accident and a death, Kathryn realizes that by shutting herself off to her father’s greatest passion, she will never really know him.
MY REVIEW:
So when I first saw this book, I thought it would be all about wine and France, but it’s not. It is basically a story about a 26 year old who realizes her father is going to die someday and wants to spend time to get to know him. It is the classic dad was not around for her growing up, so they spend two weeks together on a wine road trip. Her father’s passion is wine and Kathyrn’s is far from it but accepts him to bond. The characters are not at all fluffed or meant to be liked, they are real people – stubborn, selfish, mean, and lonely.
The book was a tough read for me because I actually don’t get along with my dad and the dad in this book reminds me of him, although I will not compare myself at all to Kathyrn! The book is not a happy story, but the real goings-on between two similar people who are not meant to get along. I feel bad for them, but at least they have a sense of humor. I do applaud the author though for being honest and sharing her story, as crazy as it is. I hope though she get’s in a better mood for her next book.
