Almost 2 years and now I hear about it…

So I missed a call earlier and when I checked my voice mail it started with “Please have a responsible adult call …..” So I was like okay I’ll bite and call back.  So it was a collection agency saying I received a Red Light ticket in May 2008.  Now I had no idea what they were talking about.  I know that sounds like an excuse but really I am clueless.  I looked it up and we had actually moved about three weeks beofre that to this new area where I received the ticket.  Now I am not disputing the ticket, I am sure my husband or I turned right on red because that was new to us – normally you stop and as long as traffic is okay then you can turn right on red.

So I called the police department and they finally found it and said yes a red light violation was sent to my old address. She had no idea why I never received anything (my mail was forwarded) and no idea why it took them almost two years to call me.  Now I have never not paid a ticket or bill, I am very good when I actually know about them!  So now I am waiting for the police sargent to call me back and let me know what they can do about all the fees and interest that has accumulated on my $100 ticket.  I am still shocked that it took this long to reach me – to think it has been on my credit report and I never noticed it!  (Yes it went on my credit I was told)

If you are not familiar with a red light violation, I’ll explain.  It is a ticket you get for turning on red and a camera takes a picture of your license plate.  Then a ticket is automatically sent to your address, or is it!  I think with all the layoffs and economy depression, I think workers are slipping and not doing their jobs properly.  I mean is it the post office that didn’t forward my mail properly, the police department that didn’t send me additional notifications, or the collection agency for not calling me sooner so I wouldn’t have this on my credit nor have so many fees associated with the ticket.  The funny thing too is I don’t even own the car anymore!

So lesson learned on my part is I need to be physic from now on and now when I might have a ticket due!

  • Hey to Jessica, I just and am still fighting about a co-pay on health insurance I already paid. I have all the proof still too, the cancelled check etc... I even sent them copies of everything return receipt requested that they signed for. Only one person I've spoken to with this huge billing company for a major health organization has been decent to talk to, everyone else are jerks.
My husband says if they take us to collections over this, he is going to sue for harassment. I don't think it's worth going to court over, but I sure am not going to let them double bill me and get away with it.
I'm about to the point that everything is going to start being paid by checks, and then I'll print out from my bank copies of the cancelled checks as they are cancelled and keep them all in a file for about seven years because of this experience.
I'm keeping all receipts for all bills paid now for about seven years now too.

  • Hey almost 18 months after the fact my step-son (who was no longer living at home and was in the Navy) got a traffic ticket for illegal parking in another city, a major city. It was for the day his car was stolen while he was at work in our town working. So my husband says hey that car was stolen on that date and a report was filed with our police dept., and they found the car about a week later wrecked beyond repair because who ever stole it, stole all the speaker equipment my step-son had put in it, the CD player etc., and then drove it into the back of brick wall at King Sooper's store in the City where the traffic parking ticket was issued, smashing it up really badly.
So their police dept. had to check with our police dept., and then they dropped the whole thing. Yet, what's up with waiting a year or more later to contact people about tickets. It's just not right.

    • I think the departments are so desperate for money they are digging wherever they can. Glad your situation was straightened out!

  • Oh wow. That's seriously not good!
I wouldn't dispute the ticket itself, but I would dispute the fees and whatnot if the police officers can't do anything.
I agree with you: Somewhere along the line, there was a mistake or something made.

Hopefully it can be resolved nicely!

    • I figure my husband or I did get the ticket and I will pay the $100 but nothing more. Still haven't heard back from anyone, I hate waiting!

  • I cannot believe that it took two years for them to get to you and they expect you to pay for all of the fees. Can they prove you got the ticket? This whole situation is insane and I hope you get the whole thing straightened out soon and it gets off your credit report. Good luck!

  • Egads! That's horrible! I think the ticketing system must be messed up - my husband was on a business trip and he got a ticket as well. Only, they sent the notice to his college address (where he was over 3 years ago). We still had to pay all the fees, even though his current address was on his license. I hope they will work with you!

  • lol that is ridiculous. How can they take two years to let you know. i have a similar experience i paid for a ticket and apparently they say they did not get the money so im still paying for it. even though my mother in law sent the check for me about 5 years ago.
