Seventh Generation Products Review & Giveaway (Ends 4/23)

There are so many toxic chemicals out there, that Seventh Generation decided for the past twenty years to lead the “responsible cleaning” charge.  They are a company that uses the power of herb thyme in their EPA registered line of disinfecting sprays and wipes that are environmentally friendly cleaning products.

The new Botanical disinfectants contain thymol, which is a component of the herb thyme, that can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys.  Best of all, they kill over 99% of germs naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.  So yes they produce non-toxic cleaners that are safe for the environment, your family, and still clean like you need them too!

Seventh Generation has teamed up with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu, who is the author of the new book “The Conscious Kitchen.”  Her book covers what’s good for your health, the planet and tastes great.  It also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:

  • Change is Good – Slowly swap out your cleaners to more green products without indoor air pollutants to reduce your indoor air pollution.
  • Think before you spray – Residues from cleaning products can last on a surface for longer than we’d like to know and travel to areas we sometimes don’t intend them to.  So you may be contaminating your food by prepping them on a surface with harsh chemical residues.
  • Home is where the clean is – Your standard cleaners are good for removing soils and dirt from kitchen surfaces, but to tackle germs you need a cleaner that is effective against microbes like bacteria and viruses.
  • Make the Old New Again – Think twice about the items that you’re using to clean and dry your kitchen equiopment and dishes.  Use rags (like old t-shirts and washclothes) instead of paper towels.  If you aren’t prepared to kick paper towel use just yet, try to use recycled versions that are unbleached or haven’t been whitened with chemicals containing chlorine and see how long you can make a roll last.
  • The Writing is on the…Sponge – Be sure to read the fine print on sponges and only purchase those that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides.  Also, remember to store sponges in a dry place and frequently clean them by popping plastic sponges wet in a microwave for two minutes or boiling sponges for three minutes in water.
  • Mom Was Right, Wash Your Hands – Wash your hands with soap and awater before and after prepping food, and always before eating.  So much of what can be potentially harmful in a a kitchen can be reduced by the simple act that doesn’t require any harsh chemicals whatsoever.

MY THOUGHTS:

The season is here, for Spring Cleaning that is.  I am slowing starting to clean windows, screens, dusting, and really cleaning all the nooks and crannies in my house.  Honestly, when we moved in here in June, I cleaned but there was so much to do as far as getting the kids situated and house unpacked that I didn’t clean as good as I should have.  Well I was thrilled when I got the chance to check out Seventh Generation products as I cleaned throughout my house.

I was amazed to read that according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the average American home has 63 hazardous chemical products in their home!  That is crazy but I have no doubt that it is true and even though I am not ready to throw away all my cleaners, I am slowly replacing them with ‘green’ cleaners as they finish.

So to get ready for Easter (and while doing more Spring Cleaning) I cleaned my bathroom with the Seventh Generation bathroom cleaner and it worked great.  My faucet shined and my toilet looked so bright and white!  I am very impressed with how quickly it dissolved the dirt and wiped away.  The lemongrass smell was strange and took a little bit to get used to but it does smell better than a chemical smell.  The wipes were nice and easy to use as well as efficient.  The multi-surface cleaner was great for all over and I loved the cleaning caddy to carry everything around in.  The paper towels work just as good as regular paper towels, they are just brown as they are 100% recycled.  My family was weirded out by the color but even though we do use a lot of rags, I still like to have paper towels on hand for company or quick wipes.  Finally, the book “The Conscious Kitchen” was a great read and very interesting!
