Book Review: “Higher Education: On Life, Landing a Job, and Everything Else They Didn’t Teach You in College” (& Giveaway Ends 6/2)

Higher Education: On Life, Landing a Job, and Everything Else They Didn’t Teach You in College

by Kennth Jedding

Publisher:  Rodale Books (April 13, 2010)

256 Pages (Hardcover)

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Today’s college grads face a new set of challenges brought on by a sluggish job market, changing technology, and staggering amounts of debt. The rules have changed since their parents were in school, leaving young adults at a loss for advice that addresses their immediate concerns as well as the big-picture questions with which each generation of young adults must contend.

Life coach Ken Jedding has spent the past decade talking one-on-one with college students and graduates across the country in his workshops and lectures. In Higher Education, he provides a fresh, modern guidebook to postcollegiate life that addresses the issues and concerns he hears voiced most often. From the lofty What is my purpose in life? to the practical How can I land my dream job? to the increasingly common (if somewhat terrifying) How did I wind up back in my parents’ house?, Jedding’s valuable insight, wisdom, and humor provide a much-needed roadmap for the journey that is only just beginning.

MY THOUGHTS:

Lucky for me when I graduated college I already was a supervisor at a book retail store.  A few months after graduation I was promoted to one of only two managers.  Then my general manager convinced me to go with him to work at a bank as a supervisor.  So basically through hard work of a few years at the book store and working my way up and then with my connections I changed jobs.  Now neither of those jobs required my actual degree I received but it helped that I had a degree period!  I was lost at where to go and what to do and I really wish I would have found “Higher Education” back when I graduated.  It is an awesome book that is an easy read (big font and lots of spaces) and yet it contains so much inside!  The four big sections are:  Careers, Relationships, Parents and Perspective.  It is not just about college and your degree but life in general after college.  This would even be a great book for someone who has not yet graduated but is preparing for their future.

Ken Jedding’s wrote this book in easy terms and he answers questions us readers are probably thinking as we read the book.  I love how it seems like he has thought of everything.  The book is also so true (at least for my life) and I found myself relating so well to his thoughts and ideas.  I would highly recommend this book for any graduate, soon to be graduate or really anyone starting off in their 20’s.  It is a book that helps put things into perspective about growing up!
