So my three year old is more Duplo aged, but he does love it when I let him play with actual Legos we also have. When I realized there is a Legoland only 20 minutes away in Schaumburg, I knew I had to take him. I checked out Legoland Discovery Center online, but I still really didn’t know what to expect or how my boys would like it.
When we first arrived at Legoland, my boys were super excited over the Lego made giraffe outside the store. We walked in and to our left was the Lego store and spot where we would eventually exit and to the right was where our adventure would begin. We got our tickets and moved along. Now I should say that Legoland can be expensive for an entire family to go, but there are tons of great discounts out there and they do offer a season pass deal if you plan on going a lot.
The first few rooms were a mini-Lego city, a Jungle room with animals, and more handmade Lego creations. Everywhere there was figurines and even pieces of art that were built with Legos! My sons especially loved the city and it was pretty amazing to see and think of the time and detail that went into it. Next came a ride that you sit in a dragon car and just go around these spaces to see a Medieval story setting. My almost 2-year old loved it, but my 3 year old was a little afraid of the dark. It was not fast, but a nice paced ride to relax for us adults. Next we went upstairs for more. First, we hit the 4D theatre, which if you don’t know what 4D is it is a 3D movie that you actually feel (for example, you may get a little wet or wind blown at you.) We saw a Lego movie featuring the Lego version of Indiana Jones and we saw a Bob the Builder movie. Both were short movies but definitely fun and something different.
Next we moved on to the free play area where there are just tables and tables of Legos to play with and ramps to have your car creations drive down. There were also big Lego bricks to build with and a whole Duplo section. Oh and if you have girls, there is an adorable pink Lego princess section! My boys played here for almost two hours. I loved it because it wasn’t my house they were getting Legos all over and there were so many different colors and shapes to build with. Right next to that area there was another ride that you sat in and peddled to make it go up and down. My 3 year old just made it height-wise and was excited to “fly” over Legos! You can also enjoy a quick meal in the Lego café right there while your kids are playing with Legos, we didn’t get a chance to eat there but everything looked good and the prices were reasonable. Since I couldn’t drag my 3 year old out of the play area, I took my youngest to the Lego tour and learned how Legos are built. That was really cool and we each even got to keep a Lego brick that was made!
Overall, my boys definitely loved it there and we will be returning. I don’t think we will go too often as there is not much to do if you are going to visit over and over again and my boys are young still. I think for a kid maybe about 5-10 years old it would be the greatest place on Earth. Kids could literally sit there for hours I’m sure and build creations with all the Legos available. My boys were happy playing with them but they aren’t big Lego builders…yet! They did love the 4D movies though and I bet could watch those over and over again. More than 2 rides would have been nice, but they were fun for kids. I think adults though would really appreciate all the Lego artwork. I am still amazed at how they made the Mona Lisa out of Legos! I wouldn’t mind going there in a few years and sitting in the Lego café and reading while my boys played, but now I had to supervise them too much because they are in the hitting and not sharing phases. I would recommend checking out Legoland at least once though as it is a Lego experience not to be missed!

My kids loved it when we went last year. Mine are a little too old but they can say they went there. Fun excursion when you are not shopping at Woodfield Mall, *sigh*.
