Recession-Proof Business?

When you think of a recession-proof business, a hair salon is probably not at the top of your list but if you think about it, it makes sense.  When compared with long hours associated with food service and retail franchises (especially around the holidays), a hair salon is the next best thing.

Supercuts is ranked #1 in Hair Care franchises and its model is built around maximizing your income while giving you plenty of family time, this is especially important for moms with kids.  Supercuts even knows how to instruct new franchises on running a sound operation so well, that a potential franchisee can open a salon and keep their current occupation until the business can support them full time.  I just read too that Supercuts is one of the largest and most known salon brand in the country, even ranked fifth best franchise opportunity in Entrepreneur magazine’s annual “Franchise 500.”

Now I started thinking about why a salon would be a great franchise and I realized that there are so many great reasons – No perishable inventory, No round the clock hours, most people choose not to cut their own hair, Cannot be outsourced, and everyone needs a haircut at some point!  I used to go to Supercuts all the time because it was right by my apartment in college and it was so affordable.  I love though how easy it makes it sound to own one and think for a mom like me it would be a great opportunity.  I would of course have to have capital to start off and find a good location but it really sounds like Supercuts wants you to succeed so they train and help out as much as they can.
