Family Dollar Shopping Review – $5 Toys!

ABOUT:

Family Dollar is one of the fastest-growing discount retail chains in the United States.  It offers an assortment of name-brand quality food products as well as fashion and seasonal merchandise at everyday low prices.  Family Dollar started business in 1959 in North Carolina and currently operates more than 6,800 stores in 44 states.

MY THOUGHTS:

A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to visit a Family Dollar media event and I honestly had never been to a Family Dollar store before.  I guess my perception was that Family Dollar was a dollar store where stuff cost more than $1 and it was cheap, off-brand products – I was wrong!  At the media event, we heard from different members of the Family Dollar family and I was really impressed that they took the time to talk to us, you could really see they care about the company they work for.  My entire perception of Family Dollar has done a 360 and I now wish I had frequented the one I used to live right down the street from.

Family Dollar is not a dollar store, it is more like a mini-Walmart.  They carry clothes, everyday items, toys, groceries, and both name-brand and store-brand items  The associate who deals with buying the products to go into the stores explained that Family Dollar is even putting a team over in China for extra quality control checking of products.  They really strive to ensure that their products don’t end up as recalled or unsafe.

Another aspect of our Family Dollar discussion was decorating for the holidays on a budget.  Well I was so surprised to learn that all the decorations around the room were from Family Dollar and how low the prices were on them.   The woman that set everything up even showed us how to make things work for decorating – like using a wreath over a vase for decoration, or tearing about leaf garland and just placing in the twines of a lamp, she even had a beautiful table set up all ready for guests to arrive!  I got some great tips and I now know where to start for the products!

After hearing from the Family Dollar staff we got to visit the local Family Dollar store in downtown Chicago.  Having never been in one before, my expectations were low and I figured I would struggle finding gifts to buy there.  My first impression though was what a nice, clean, and organized store it was, not to mention the friendly staff that greeted me.

The first thing I noticed is the big selection of clothes they carried for the entire family, including licensed sporting apparel.  Next came the toy department which my boys would have been in heaven if they say it!  Yes there are some off-brand products but now that I know the quality assurance that goes into them, I don’t mind buying them.  I could not though pass up the huge selection of Hot Wheels products they had and all at such reasonable prices!  I got my boys a Hot Wheels car set for $20 and I am sure at Toys R Us it would cost at least $30.  I learned though that the reason Family Dollar can sell products so low is that they work with companies to make certain price-points.  For example, they tell Hot Wheels they want a car set for $20 so to make that happen, Hot Wheels will only include 1 car instead of the typical two cars or include less race track.  Sometimes the packaging is smaller also but overall the price at Family Dollar will always be cheaper for the quantity.

The best part though about Family Dollar is that you can really pick up a little of everything.  You can get socks, clothes, gifts, school supplies, housewares, electronics and even groceries.  Family Dollar wants to be a one-stop shop for consumers and wants them to be able to get the most for their dollar.  I love that I could pick up some items to feed my family dinner and pick up some items for my house and as gifts.  As far as gifts go, Family Dollar is definitely the place to go this Christmas.  I know I keep mentioning Hot Wheels, but that is just one of the name brands.  You can also find great Disney items featuring Toy Story, Cars, and Disney Princesses.

They are featuring:

  • $5 toys and gifts for boys and girls at every age featuring popular brand names like Hot Wheels and Bakugan.
  • 10% discounts on bulk toy purchases of $100 or more, perfect for the charitable gift-giver
  • Featured Family Dollar holiday recipe and coupon booklet to lend a hand with holiday gathering and entertaining needs

Overall, I highly recommend checking to see if there is a Family Dollar in your area and checking out their great selection. You can get more for your money, can make it a one-stop shopping trip and since the store is smaller you save time running in and out.
