How Organizing a Closet Saved My Marriage…

Okay so this is not going to be a long post, but I had to share.  Now first I have to say that my husband is not the handiest, but can work a drill and tap measure.  So we have a Mudroom off our kitchen that leads out to the garage and it was a disaster!  There are only four of us but the room was a mess!  We had a million shoes, jackets, and other miscellaneous items laying all over.  I was tripping over items, losing items in the mess and ready to garbage bag everything!

Before:

I was fighting with my husband over his stuff being everywhere and how I couldn’t take it anymore!  He would lay his laptop bag right inside the door and I constantly tripped over it and he never put his shoes in the black bins I set up.  Now the bins are great for toys and clothes, but they just weren’t working for shoes.  So I told my husband he needed to fix it!  We went to Menards (local home improvement store) and decided upon silver shelving since the white would stand out too much (the room is right off our kitchen and since the door is always open, the white shelving would be seen all the time.)  We bought the shelves, tracks, and brackets, and my husband even found a great slide out basket.  The whole project cost maybe about $200, but it definitely saved us from many more fights.

After:

Since the shelves have been up, I have not tripped over anything and we are now a much happier family!  We can all find our shoes, coats, and winter accessories.  The drawer has been a lifesaver too since I can toss in our winter accessories so we don’t loose anything!  That money was the best money we have spent in awhile because the Mudroom is a room we use daily and we no longer fight!  (Of course there are other things we can now fight about, but it is one less topic!)

  • You have written really well points.I think people can add wall cabinets, storage bench and bins to add storage in their entryway. One more point is to go for inbuilt locker instead of stand alone.Place a rug near door to wipe shoes.

  • What a great change! We don't have a mudroom. We have the garage (which DH always complains about being messy) and a hallway with a small closet. We try to keep all the jackets and coats hung in the closet, BUT it is right in front of the door to the garage and we all get piled up there as we leave the house or return. It is annoying! We have an antique hall tree, a shoe organizer, and wall hooks in the hallway, but it always looks too cluttered and we can see it from our kitchen. *sigh*

We have a large open great room with a kitchen in the corner. The Dining room is behind it and doesn't have doors. Three of our bedrooms open up into it. It seems like NOTHING is ever truly hidden in this house. We need to de-clutter as much as possible, but I think it would be easiest to move everything out and start over. LOL!
