iTunes App Review: Eek and Slo

Eek and Slo – Emantras Inc

Released:  March 10, 2011

ABOUT THE APP:

Ever seen your kindergartener spend hours watching or chasing worms and bugs? Mini beasts seem to hold a particular attraction for little ones. Punflay’s new offering Eek and Slo for your pre-K and Kindergarten kids builds on this fascination by introducing two crazy insect characters – Eek the earthworm and Slo the snail. Through an entertaining but simple story spun around these two characters, Punflay seeks to introduce your child to the key pre-number spatial concepts of up and down. And living up to the theory that doing is learning, in this app, your child will not only see things go up and down, but will actually push things up and down in every screen.

When Eek decides to come up from his underground home for a walk, he disturbs the slumbering Slo. Completely unaware of the disturbance he has caused, Eek briskly walks through a farm peering curiously at the farm animals while Slo puffs along crossly behind him, demanding an apology. As they walk through the farm, they climb up and tumble down things, besides finding other things along their way that bob up and down. Lovely child-friendly illustrations and extremely simple text make the app particularly inviting for children. Interactions on every page, each carefully designed to promote understanding of the concepts of up and down, are calculated to bring the child back again and again to the app.

Features:

  • Focus on the concepts of up and down
  • Focused and interesting interactions
  • Cute characterization
  • Lovely illustrations
  • Kid-friendly voiceover
  • Combining fun and learning

MY THOUGHTS:

This is an adorable and bright app that keeps my boys attention.  It is a storybook that reads to you and on each page there is an interaction you can do.  First off when you just glide your fingers on the screen a glimmer of sparkles goes across the screen, which is cute, or when you click on animals they make noises or say something.  The best part though is that the story says Up and Down and your child then can move the animals up and down to do something and get a reaction.  It is very cute and my boys love to do it, they are learning too about Up and Down and how things move.  Overall, its cute and very simple, but my boys love it and the characters of Eek and Slo.

BUY IT: You can download Eek and Slo – Emantras Inc for $0.99 for your iPad.
