MY THOUGHTS:

I wasn’t sure what to expect with the COBY Portable HD Video Player, but I admit I was surprised with its quality.  For starters, even though it says 7 inch screen, I didn’t realize how big that was and the picture is high-definition quality.  To use the player, you just hook it up to your computer via USB and drag and drop your files on there!  I will say I didn’t see anywhere in the instructions on what file types are allowed and which aren’t, but so far I haven’t had a problem transferring anything.  I love that there is no special software required and you don’t have to convert your movies or songs into any special format for them to play.

The COBY Video Player comes in two sizes, 4GB or 8GB, with a slot for microSDHC card for added memory up to 16GB.  I would definitely recommend getting the 8GB if you are going to add a lot to it as with the 4GB I could only fit one movie and some pictures, and then I did have some room left over which would probably have fit an eBook.  I found most of our movies to be anywhere from 2.5-4.5 GB so I picked my son’s favorite movie and added it.  He now walks around with it like it’s the coolest thing in the world!

(Yes I realize I haven’t changed the date yet!)

The one aspect that took getting used to was that it was no touch screen, which if you are used to an iPad or iPod then it does take a few try’s to remember its not touch screen!  It does come with a small remote, which would be great though if you were using the player in the car or hooked up to your television – you can enjoy Full 1080p on your HDTV easily!  To make using it easy though there are only a few buttons on the top so it is not confusing or hard to maneuver through the menus.

Overall, my boys are hooked on the COBY Portable HD Video Player.  It is perfect for their little hands and for the price I feel a lot better them using it rather than our iPad.  It also has so many uses which we haven’t really taken advantage of yet, including FM radio, adding eBooks, and songs.  There are no games to play on it, but my boys don’t seem to mind!  I love too that it comes with a nice pouch to store the player in and that it charges and connects to your computer via USB.  To charge the player I can either hook it up to my computer or plug it into the wall (both are included) so charging it anywhere is pretty quick and convenient.  For the price of less than or around $100 (depending on size) it is a great buy for families or just someone who wants it for basic viewing – really the big difference other than the huge price drop between the COBY player and an iPad is there are no apps or camera.  Otherwise you can do pretty much the same things!

My Video Review:

BUY IT: Look for COBY products, including the 7” HD Video Player (retail value:  $109.99) wherever electronics are sold or look for it on Amazon.

  • Other than home movies, is there any way to purchase/save regular movies to this thing? I have been unsuccessful to date; Disney movies don't work on it, and I don't know enought about what's out there to know what's what (I don't get into the high-tech stuff very much), so I appreciate any advice. I bought this for my daughter, and everything works great except saving movies.

  • I think I may have a defective machine and may exchange it soon - love it so far, but the HDMI and standard video output aren't working. If you own one and it works for you, let me know. Thanks!

The reason I got it is to replace my DVD player. I have been looking for an MP4 player with a REMOTE for over a year and yes, I must have remote. The Coby is the first MP4 player I have seen with a remote - and I have been looking for quite a while.

I just hope it is just a problem with this one machine, or that I can find a resolution to this issue soon so I don't have to exchange it for a new one.

  • Now I see why DVDs include a computer file of the movie as well. Perfect for that player! Love the sleek size and design!
