My boys are huge train-fans and when I heard about the “Day Out With Thomas: Leader of the Track Tour 2011” I knew we had to go. I actually had no clue that just 50 minutes away from our house was a train museum, the Illinois Railway Museum.
The “Day of Out With Thomas” event includes:
The main feature of the tour is the 20-minute ride with Thomas, which is actually a real train that has a painted Thomas car for the lead train. You have a set train ride time for that so you are guaranteed a spot and the rest of the attractions are bonuses!
We arrived right when the Illinois Railway Museum opened and had three hours before our scheduled train departure. We walked around the museum grounds, which were set up like fair grounds. There was tents with all sorts of free activities like train tables to play at, temporary train tattoos, coloring sheets and crafts, gift shops, bouncy houses, and more. My boys were absolutely amazed at the model railway displays, which there were two huge displays of. We probably spent at least half our time just watching the model trains go round and round! Other than the Thomas ride, there were also streetcars and a few other trains that you could ride around the fairgrounds, but we didn’t have time for them because they were 20-40 minute rides and we didn’t want to miss our Thomas ride.
My husband’s favorite was touring the actual trains. There were multiple trains that you could walk through that were quite old and really cool to walk through. You got to see how the old train cabins were and dining cars and so forth. Amazing how people rode the rails back in the day and slept in such tight cabins.
After eating a quick bite of hot dogs and pretzels, we headed for our Thomas ride. We got to sit on a regular train and take a 20-minute ride. It was a fun ride and exciting for my boys.
Overall, we had a great time and will definitely be heading back next year. Whether your child is a Thomas & Friends fan or just a train lover, the “Day Out With Thomas: Leader of the Track Tour 2011” is an exciting event for the whole family to enjoy!
