Guest Post: Want to Save Money on that Phone Bill? Go Prepaid

The cost of owning a smart phone is outrageous. While I would like to say that I am comfortable with $150 a month for both my husband and I to have a phone, I’m not. In fact, I’m kind of appalled. But I have gotten so used to having one around that I don’t know how I would survive without it.

I use my smartphone for everything from scheduling appointments to posting to my blog to writing my grocery list. However, I would still like to cut down my monthly bill.

My husband and I already switched to the lowest plan. We have minimal minutes, texting, and data – which is actually plenty for both of us – but the bill is still pretty high. Not ready to give in and go back to a traditional cell phone, I started looking around for different options and happened to come across prepaid cell phones.

A couple of years ago, purchasing a prepaid cell phone meant choosing an incredibly outdated model that simply made calls. If you were lucky, it may have also had a front facing clock on the cover. Nowadays, you can purchase prepaid smart phones. No old models here. You can get many of the same great phones, download apps, and not have to worry about any expensive contracts.

That’s definitely a great option for when the kids get old enough to have phones, and it will be a great lesson in responsibility. They will have to learn how to effectively manage their talk time, texting, and data usage if they want to have a phone to use all month,

I may just switch myself when my our contract is up to save a few bucks. No sense in continuing with an expensive plan, if I can get the same great service with a cheaper option.
