My boys (3 and 4 years old) love their Hexbugs. Those little vibrating bugs are everywhere but I am okay with it because they really do keep them busy! Well just in time for Halloween Hexbugs has come out with Glow in the Dark HexBugs and Habitat Sets. These bugs are perfect for Halloween but I know we will be playing with them long after Halloween.

HexBug Larva
HexBug Larva is a micro robotic creature that slithers forward on smooth surfaces. These Larva has a built-in sensor to react to its environment, instinctively changing direction upon sensing an object in its path and wriggling off to explore a clear, undisturbed path ahead.
I was fortunate to receive enough of the Nanos and a few of the Hexbug Habitat sets so I could have a Hexbug Nano Halloween party with our friends! So I emailed out invitations and needless to say all the kids were excited! Kids from ages 3 to 8 were over, both boys and girls, and all of them had a ball with these new bugs. We also received some of the HexBug Larva which are bigger robotic bugs that slither around and honestly creep me our a little bit – but of course the kids love them!
First all the kids got to pick out their Halloween Zombie Nanos and regular Glow in the Dark Nanos. After opening them up, the bugs were off! What is nice about the Non Glows in the Dark Habitat Set is that it can be built in so many different ways that it allows for endless fun and possibilities. My husband built our setup in maybe ten minutes and there is no wrong way to design your track! I am sure once my boys are a few years older they will love building and re-building tracks for their Hexbugs, but right now they are happy just watching the bugs zoom by on the tracks. We built our design big enough so all the kids could spread around and play, and of course we had our original track out for more fun.
After a quick meal of pizza and juice, it was finally dark enough to test out the glow in the dark aspect. The set says it only needs an hour of light to charge it up so it glows but we wanted to wait until it was really dark to test it out. So off went the lights (we have high windows without window treatments so we had to wait until the sky was dark outside) and after a brief pause of silence the kids immediately went “Ahhhhh” and “Cool!” So we all played in the dark for a few minutes and it was even more fun to watch the bugs zoom by glowing themselves and on the glow in the dark track!
While this Hexbug Nano may seem just for Halloween, I really think they are just cool in general. You can also remove the skeleton if you’d like or put it back on. You could also purchase the regular Glow in the Dark Hexbug Nanos which come in a test tube for about $9.99 each. It really is amazing how these little vibrating bugs keep my boys engaged and they actually play nice together! You could also come up with fun games with them like racing them, having them battle each other, and more!
