ABOUT:
Peaceable Kingdom is a place where dinosaurs roam and a mermaid princess swims, where a child can host a fairy tea party or sail the open seas on a pirate ship. A place of imagination and exploration and fun.
Peaceable Kingdom has just come out with two new cooperative games and two new games in a new category, Preschool Skills Builder games. With guidance from educators, retailers and paretns, these new games are appropriate for early childhood developemental skills in children ages 3-6 years old. The new category, Preschool Skills Builder, uses tasks like cutting with safety scissors or recognizing left from right.
MY THOUGHTS:
I really like the idea of a “Cooperative Game,” especially at young ages. I am not big into competition and while some is healthy, it is also healthy to learn to work together. A Cooperative Game allows families (and kids) to share in decision-making, learn to share, build confidence and work as a team. It is also nice if you have a sensitive child who doesn’t cope well with losing.
Unlike most memory matching games Race to the Treasure encourages kids to help each other find the matches. This way, kids work together, they help each other, and everybody wins! A cooperative game eliminates stress, builds self-esteem, and teaches kids that playing together can be fun! Players try to beat the Ogre to the treasure by creating a path from START to END. Along the way they need to collect 3 keys to open the treasure. Players strategize, cooperate and build the path together. If they do it before the Ogre gets there, they win! (Ages 5+)
The first thing I love about Race to the Treasure is that the instructions are printed inside the lid of the box! Yeah no instruction’s to loose! Next is that all the game pieces can be put back in the included envelope so you don’t have loose pieces flying around when you open the box. The object of the game is to get to the treasure before the Ogre does, by of course working together. So 2-4 players work together choosing which way to put their Path Cards which guide them towards the three keys they need to earn. While they are playing though if they pick up on Ogre card instead of a Path Card then the Ogre gets one spot closer to the treasure. My five year old loves this game because he is all about mazes and moving around on a gameboard and with the Path Cards you create the direction you are moving! It is a challenge to line the cards up the right way all while picking up the three keys you need and then racing to the treasure before the Ogre! I will say though my son was excited to have the Ogre pop up! This is an adorable game and even though it says ages 5 and up, my 3 year old is picking up how to play the game! Great decision making and teamwork going on in this game!
