iTunes App Review: “Richard Scarry’s Busytown”

Richard Scarry’s Busytown HD – Night & Day Studios, Inc.

Updated: October 21, 2011

ABOUT THE APP:

Busytown, the memorable storybook world filled with adorable animal families, outrageous pickle cars, and endless items to discover and examine has now come to life!  This is not another videogame. It’s an exploration of Richard Scarry’s Busytown, where his drawings come to life. Join Huckle Cat—and find Goldbug!—in this imaginative and interactive picture book based on Scarry’s best-selling series and optimized for the iPad.

The adventure begins by choosing your animal: bunny, cat, fox, or pig. Name your character and play dress up by selecting your animal’s outfit. Begin your day by waking up in your bedroom; check the window to see the weather outside. Move into the other rooms of your house–and parts of your town–and help other animals find what they’re looking for.

In each room you can tap everywhere to hear and see the names of tons of foods, tools, and other items; many object are animated so you can see how things work. Open the dishwasher and start the vacuum cleaner. In the grocery store you might be looking for asparagus or beets; you can use the scale and open the cash register. In the firehouse you’ll hunt for boots, spray the fire hose, and ring the alarm bell. Each scene and mission will be different every time you play. Curiosity pays off!

Features:

  • Dozens of items to touch and interact with
  • Characters from four animal species to dress and name
  • Six fully interactive rooms to search and explore, rearranged each time you return to them
  • A different mission for every scene and every game
  • Meet friendly grownups and kids along the way
  • Goldbug is hidden in each scene (he’ll be somewhere else next time)
  • Tap-Anywhere play: even little kids can’t fail to have fun!

MY THOUGHTS:

This is an adorable app full of Busytown characters that my boys have been ‘busy’ with!  You get to choose your animal, name him, dress him and check out Busytown.  In each room you have to have a mission to find or do certain things.  For example in the grocery store, it may ask you to find the yogurt.  So not only do kids have to find certain things but they learn the word and where they are typically found.  Like I showed my son how yogurt is found in the Dairy section.  My boys love to explore and check out the different items.  There is a lot to find and things even change around so kids don’t get bored.

BUY IT: You can download Richard Scarry’s Busytown HD – Night & Day Studios, Inc. for your iPad for $3.99.
