Polyps Surgery & Recovery

So Doug had his surgery Thursday and it was a long day. For the past year (maybe longer) he hasn’t been able to really taste or smell like he should. Finally he saw a doctor who discovered he had giant polyps in his nose.  Surgery was a last resort but after some steroid treatments and a CAT scan the doctor discovered these polyps had to go.  It was scary too because they were close to his brain.

So at 8am we headed to the outpatient clinic and Doug was prepped for sinus surgery.  He was taken back for his IV and that’s when the issues started.  You see Doug has not had an IV put in since he was a toddler and is not a fan of needles or giving blood.  Now I wasn’t in the room here is what I was told by the nurse and Doug.  While the nurse is trying to put the IV in Doug tensed up and flailed his arms.  I don’t know if the initial medicine (not anesthesia yet) hit him hard or the nurse mis-understood him but the nurse came out to get “Natalie.”  She said “Natalie” for Doug in the waiting room which I finally realized she was referring to me.  I said my name was Cherise not Natalie and she said “Is there a Donna with you?”  I said No.  So for whatever strange reason the nurse thought or Doug said that he came with Natalie and Donna.  So confusing and crazy!

A polyp is an abnormal growth of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane.

Finally the doctor was ready for surgery so Doug was wheeled off.  He took to the anesthesia well and the surgery too went well.  It was two hours long and then almost two hours for him to wake up and be able to move about.  We were at the outpatient clinic for a total of seven hours!

Doug is home now, nose bleeding like crazy but not really in any pain.  He is lucky too because some doctors pack noses with gauze or stints and his doctor did neither.  His nose is bleeding on gauze taped to his face but overall it seems to be slowing down.

So I am now taking care of three kids and a recovering husband, wish me luck!

  • I will keep your family in my prayers. There is nothing like a sick hubby... Sometimes they are worse than the kidos..lol.. With lots of prayer and Tylenol for you, prayer and pain meds for him, I know God will have him on the mends in no time.

    P.S

Thanks again for all you do. You run a tight ship and still find time for your blog. I am grateful. :-)

    • Thanks for your kind words! Yes my hubby is worse than when my kids are sick! Men! My blog is my savior, it is the only thing in the whole house that is just mine!

  • So glad he is home and the surgery went well! Hopefully he heals quickly! Still sending good thoughts and prayers!! Remember to take care of you too ((((hugs))) He is SO lucky he didn't have to have his nose packed. Ugh that was awful. I got violently sick from all the meds the night of my surgery and the next morning, all while having my nose packed and being in pain (coudln't keep any pain meds down). I had my first nose/nasal surgery at 17 and my mom was furious they even sent me home that night (my surgery was pushed back so wasn't until 2:30.. and then my oxygen kept dropping & I wasn't coming out of the anesthesia that quickly but they still sent me home at 7:00).

    • My husband took 2 hours to wake up from anesthesia. Then as soon as he could sit up and eat and drink something, we were discharged. Luckily his dr. doesn't do packing, but he did have a bandage of gauze he had to change every hr because it kept bleeding. He is doing amazing. Luckily our boys went to grandmas so he had so piece to rest all day otherwise they would have been on top of him wanting to play!

So your polyps never came back?

      • I was told the polyps would most likely come back, too, but so far so good. Its been about 7 years since my 2nd nasal surgery. I know they could come back at anytime, but I was feeling somewhat "safe", then my mom had polyps removed from her vocal cords 15 years ago and just recently she started having some problems again and will likely be having surgery soon.

How is your husband doing now?

        • He is good. He is going to get regular checkups and his dr. also said they could come back anytime.
