Keep Your WiFi Password to Yourself @HotspotShield #HotspotShield

Disclosure:  I am a Hotspot Shield Ambassador that is compensated and will be sharing my honest opinion.

At home we have two wireless networks, our regular one and a guest one.  Our guest one is an easy password we give out when friends or family come over, and boy am I surprised how many people ask for our WiFi password!  I guess data charges for smartphones are not all created equal and some of our friends have very low plans so they mainly use WiFi.  So anyways our guest wireless network isn’t connected to our other computers and it is one we can easily turn off when not in use.  I am not sure exactly what my husband does but I know it doesn’t have as much access as our main wireless network.

I never give out our WiFi password for our main network.  If one of my kids need it then I put it in of course after checking what they need it for!  I know it may be easy to just hand out to people but if you think about it, your WiFi network may grant access to all the files on your personal computer, access to your various online accounts (especially if you use the same password) and people could accidentally download malware or something dangerous onto your network.  Honestly I wouldn’t even trust my mom with our WiFi password because half the time she doesn’t even know what she is downloading!

So if you have guests over or even want to limit access for your kids  then I definitely suggest created a second network with limited access.  If that is above your techie level, then at least make sure you put the password in for only people you trust.

One way to keep your computer safe once online is to use a VPN (virtual private network) such as HotSpot Shield.  It is a great way to keep your browsing and shopping to yourself and secure.  It also protects against malware, which  includes a variety of hostile computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware, and other malicious programs.
