My kids (2, 5 and 7) love their LeapPad tablets, yes even my 7 year old plays his still. It can be hard though to find games to appeal to my boys now that they are getting older but Leapfrog has been releasing some games that are geared towards a little bit older kids rather than preschoolers.
Create a fantastic universe and get drawn into the action. Design a hero, record sounds and draw game elements. On this epic journey, your child will be challenged to find the magical Pen of Power, reunite the Book of Wonder’s scattered pages and save the Kingdom. Players build storytelling and art skills as they customize the adventure, leading up to a climactic showdown with the evil wizard Grumpus. Epic customization. Each stage of the journey is an opportunity for creative expression. Draw a heroic character and play as the hero throughout the game. Learn about art while drawing and coloring game elements that help move the adventure forward. Save the drawings for future play. Fun storytelling. Players decide the story’s direction by coming up with creative solutions to obstacles in the hero’s path. Draw platforms or vehicles to cross the Kingdom. Use the microphone to record personalized sounds like the hero’s catchphrase, victory cries and more. Revisit the adventure by repairing the Book of Wonder. Fill-in-the-blank storytelling activities and art studio games introduce different story elements-like setting, problem and solution-and incorporate the personalized voiceovers.
Okay so my boys (5 and 7) are not big into drawing and I have seen games where you have to draw parts of the game before but it didn’t grab their attention. “Adventure Sketchers!” is the exception! They love this game and honestly I played it longer than I probably should of. First off you start off the game as a blank character and slowly work your way through creating yourself. While playing you have to draw and color things to get to the next part, which my boys loved having the freedom to be silly in the game. I think they felt as if they were creating their own video, which in essence they were. The game has so much in it that it is really hard to explain, other than to say I can’t see a child being disappointed with it. We have never tried a game so interactive like this one.
Here are some screenshots from my son playing the game:
Its not really educational in the sense of math, science or geography but it does have reading in it and requires creative thinking. Kids need to make decisions, solve problems and be creative to pass this game – so its educational but its not if that makes sense. More like an older kid game rather than a typical educational Leapfrog game, not that it is inappropriate for kids or anything. I recommend it for any parent looking for a game to broaden their child’s horizons and get them back on their Leappads!
