More Than 80,000 Chemicals Not Fully Tested? Help By Signing Seventh Generation’s Petition! #MC #FightToxins

Disclosure:  I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Seventh Generation. I received a promotional item and product samples as a thank you for participating.

Did you know that more than 80,000 chemicals available in the United States have never been fully tested for their toxic effects on our health and environment?  The EPA has actually only required testing on less than 10% of the chemicals.  Then to think that toxic chemicals have been linked by scientists to health risks such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, learning disabilities, asthma, birth defects and more, its scary!  There is an act that was passed in 1976, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), but it has never been updated and as it stands tens of thousands of potentially harmful chemicals continue to be used in the marketplace without proper testing and without disclosure by the companies that produce them.  (You can read more about the issue on the Natural Resources Defense Council website.

Now I am not one to use natural products regularly nor have I really ever thought about chemicals.  I guess I assumed that what was in the store was safe around myself and my family, but now I know that was a bad assumption.  As a mom I of course want the best for my family now and for their own futures.  I am for now on phasing out all those crazy chemical cleaners I have and switching to more natural ones.  I will say for the few I already have they work just as good, if not better, than the chemical-full ones I have.  Crazy but true!  I’d hate to think that my cleaning products are what causes my son’s asthma attacks.

Well Seventh Generation wants to do their part in saying goodbye to toxic chemicals by creating a petition to urge Congress to reevaluate the Toxic Substances Control Act for the first time since 1976.  Be a Toxin Freedom Fighter and help Seventh Generation reach its goal of collecting 100,000 signatures by April 24th by signing the petition for chemical reform and urging your friends and family to do the same!  It takes just a minute and who knows our signatures just may make a difference!

Seventh Generation will also be hosting a #FightToxins Twitter Party on Thursday April 10th from 1:00-2:00 PM ET to chat about tips and tricks for living a healthy, green lifestyle as well as the importance of using products with as few chemicals as possible.
