Keeping Your Family Safe This Winter @KiddeSafety #RecipeforSafety

Did you know that wintertime is the deadliest season for home fires?  Or that cooking is actually the number one cause of home fires and injuries?  Most fatal home fires happen in homes because of a lack of a smoke alarm or a non-working one.  I admit when we moved in to our current house, checking all the smoke detectors was not something that crossed my mind.  I had no idea how long they had been there, the last time they were checked or even if we had enough of them around our house.  We did finally check them all and update them actually, luckily we didn’t have anything happen in the meantime.

With winter and cooking up a storm for the holidays here, I figured it was an appropriate time to mention some safety statistics.  I know, I know…..something else to think about during the holiday season, but yeah its important.  All it could take is one holiday cookie slipping off the tray and burning or catching fire or even your Christmas tree starting on fire, which on average happens in one of every 40 reported home fires.  Fire in general honestly scares me, I can’t even imagine having a fire in my house.

Crazy stats to think about:

  • Nearly five times as many Americans know the shelf life of a Twinkie snack cake rather than the recommended operating life of a smoke alarm – 44% of respondents correctly identified 45 days as the shelf live of a Twinkie while only 9% correctly answered 10 years as a smoke alarm’s operating life.
  • Working smoke alarms cuts the chances of dying in a fire in half
  • Almost three out of every five home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
  • Home fire deaths rose 16% in 2013
  • An American dies in a home fire nearly every three hours

Above are just some of the findings from a recent Kidde survey and to me they are super scary.  Its amazing how something as simple as proper smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and a kitchen fire extinguisher can make all the difference.  Luckily Kidde makes a product for all those needs.  Such small expenses for safety.

They have the Worry-Free alarm line as either separate or combination smoke and CO alarms:

A Kidde Worry-Free carbon monoxide alarm with digital display – this is nice if you already have smoke alarms but want to add a CO alarm:

Kidde kitchen fire extinguisher – I actually like to give these as house warming gifts.  Silly and something that may never get used, but important:

Kidde has also come out with a Recipe for Safety that gives parents some great tips for keeping their families safe.  This is perfect to even print out and share with your kids or even print out and give with a Kidde Fire Extinguisher as a gift.
