What makes the LeapFrog Epic so “Epic”?

I received the product below to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

With so many tablets out there, it can be overwhelming where to start on purchasing a tablet for your your kids. With my family all three of my kid’s their first tablet was a LeapFrog one but then with all the android tablets available, they wanted one of those next. As a mom I want them to have the latest technology but also know that they will be safe on it. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a tablet that grows with your child with auto-leveling learning games and is Android based? Well LeapFrog’s newest tablet, LeapFrog Epic, is just that!

Compared to other LeapFrog devices it is faster and bigger but it still features all the safety features you expect from a LeapFrog tablet. The main feature that may be a make it or break it for you is it does not take the LeapFrog cartridges. This tablet is strictly for downloading apps so if you have a lot of LeapFrog game cartridges from your other LeapFrog devices keep in mind you won’t be able to use them on this one.

So what makes the LeapFrog Epic so “Epic”?

  • Customizable home screen that looks like a virtual world that kids can actually create and explore. Users can add stickers, watch night fall and more.

  • Just for Me™ learning – This technology personalizes select games to challenge kids as they grow, making the games at their level
  • Popular Android apps like Doodle Jump and Fruit Ninja Academy: Math Master are available in the app store. You do have to purchase the games separately via the app store with them ranging from $5 to $25 (for full cartridges games.) This can add up but you do get 20+ apps already installed on the device, my kids have yet to ask for a new game. This gives parents a good way to reward kids as they can earn games through chores and good behavior. Also, the app store is not a regular Android store but rather only features handpicked apps that are safe and educator-approved.

  • World-class kid-safe web with kid-appropriate web content. Parents can even add websites they trust. There are no ads or ways for kids to click through to un-safe content.

  • Parental controls allow parents to manage what apps each child’s profile can access, what times of the day they are allowed on the device and how long they can access various apps. You can customize up to three kid’s profiles.

  • Durable bumper case and a shatter-safe LCD screen allows kids to have extra protection from everyday drops and bumps. The bumper case is removable if your child wants a more grown up look.

  • 7 inch touch screen
  • Front and rear 2 MP cameras
  • Expandable up to 32GB (from 16 GB) via a Micro SD Card
  • About six hours of battery life before requiring charging
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in
  • Includes latched stylus

  • Android 4.4 version plus a quad-core processor – I did feel like it was pretty fast!

My kids range from 4 years old to 8 years old and all three of them like this new LeapFrog tablet, they each have their favorite parts of it. I love that I don’t have to worry about un-safe ads or in-appropriate games, especially with my 4 year old who loves to click! I was bummed that we couldn’t use any of our LeapFrog cartridges in it but we will just continue to use them in our other LeapFrog tablets. Like I said though you do get a lot of games already pre-installed so that will keep kids busy!

BUY IT:  Leapfrog Epic is available at a suggested retail price of $139.99 on LeapFrog or you can find the LeapFrog Epic on Amazon.

  • I really like this tablet from leapfrog, Love that it is loaded with fun stuff for the children, also that it comes with its only stylus and if they drop it , its not going to break... I don't like the price that they are asking ....

  • I love that this has so many functions and does so much to help your child not only have fun but real learning tools..

  • I wish I could afford to get one of these for all of my grand kids. I think they would be really nice for any kid to have.

  • I am impressed that this worked well for your kids age ranges. Nice to be able to use it for different ages.
