Spark Reading With Whooo’s Reading

This post was written with a partnership with Learn 2 Earn.

I have always loved reading and would beg to go to the library when I was younger. My boys though have not yet discovered how amazing reading can be. They are both receiving extra help in reading at school and I still have hopes for them to really appreciate reading like I do. To encourage extra reading, I have turned to rewards. We have tried a ticket system but that really hasn’t worked out so I have been looking for other ways to motivate reading.

What is Whooo’s Reading?

Whooo’s Reading is a website that gets kids excited to read and actually think about what they are reading. It uses ‘coins’ as rewards which are dived out online – then parents or teachers can decide on the reward.

What do I love about Whooo’s Reading?

It is so easy to use! I set up an account for my oldest child so far and it is so great for both him and I to use. Kids get to input the book they are reading and minutes they read. Then the kids get to Answer Questions, Write a Review and/or Write a Blog Post about the book.

Inputting a book is very easy and you can either search their books or click on a book already read to add reading minutes to it.

This is the main dashboard you see when you log in, very clean and user friendly. My son has his own log in and he just logs in and inputs his reading when he can. He can also answer questions if he wants to. I found too a calendar that can be easily looked at to see how reading minutes are going.

My son found he was also motivated by others seeing his progress, which Whooo’s Reading has a spot to invite mentors. I am a mentor to my son so far, but we will be adding grandparents.

What really got my son motivated though is that its online, which he is all about anything online. He loves being able to log in and watch the ‘coins’ add up. I will be adding in my other son next and eventually my daughter. It’s amazing how this rewards system has really sparked my son’s interest in reading. Moreover it will be great for his reading comprehension because of the questions asked. Oh and ask far as the questions go, they are not specific to books but rather general book questions. I worry that my son will fly through books but not really comprehend them – reading isn’t all that valuable if you don’t get what the book is about, right?

The questions are a little over my son’s head right now as he has trouble reading some of them in general but he does really like the Write a Review section which is easy enough.

Whooo’s Reading is for students from kindergarten to 8th grade. It really does motivate kids to read more and improve their reading and writing skills. I have found as well it helps confidence, which since its online kids can work at their own pace. Parents or Teachers can then easily access their reading comprehension skills from any device including a smartphone, tablet or computer. Yes this is for both parents and teachers!

Whats the catch?

No catch! Whoo’s Reading is actually free! There is a Premium version for $5/month or $50/year which includes a few extras. I haven’t found the need for them, yet, but I definitely see the value in upgrading, especially for teachers and its affordable.

Looking to spark reading in your child or classroom? Or maybe you have a reader but they need a push for comprehension or even friendly competition to read more?
