My Child’s Experience With Challenger Sports British Soccer Camps @ChallengerCamps

This past week my 7-year-old got to do something none of my kids have done before. He attended a sports camp for the sport he loves, soccer. Now it was only a half-day camp I chose for him (mainly since it was his first time and I know what he can handle) but it was enough that he was in his glory each day.

The camp I chose was Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp. It is actually the most popular camp in North America and hosts nearly 150,000 campers each year. Our session of camp was hosted at a nearby park district and led by five British men, well actually four were younger. Each age group seemed to be broken down and divided amongst the coaches. What I will say is these coaches, young as they were, had not only patience for the kids but they listened to them, helped them work on moves and seemed to really care. You know how sometimes you get a teacher or coach who is simply there to do their job and go home? Well that is far from the case with the coaches we experienced. They were all so nice and I think I would have lost it with all those kids!

As far as what is taught, I admit I didn’t stay the full four hours each day so I can’t say everything that was done, but my son of course gave me the play-by-play for the days. They worked on different moves, taking turns, passing and had games amongst each other. My son who is super full of energy was pretty exhausted each day I would pick him up, but he said he loved every minute. When Friday came around, he asked when camp started again!

I think having coaches from another part of the world was a great experience as well for my son. They had different teaching styles than he was used to and the coaches were all so great with the kids. My son has also never been coached by someone other than a volunteer parent (who may or may not have had any prior soccer experience.) It was great for him to play and learn from coaches who love soccer as much as he does. I will say too I watched some of the coaches before camp started and they were good! Parents are also given the option to host the coaches in their home like a foreign-exchange program, and then they receive credit towards camp.
