As a mom of three I admit I don’t get a chance to read to all my kids as much as I’d like to. From taking one kid to an activity to housework to my own job, I am just tired by the end of the day. Well an international hit is making its way to the US that is packed with stories, music and fun. Bookaboo is a series geared towards preschoolers that celebrates the fun and benefits of adults and children reading together. Bookaboo uses puppetry, live action and CGI animation of Bookaboo and his bandmates. Yes I said bandmates as Bookaboo is in a band that tours the globe. Bookaboo cannot play a show though without a story a day. Bookaboo though gets caught up with silly songs and activities, which he of course enjoys as he avoids performing. To encourage Bookaboo to return to the stage to perform, a famous face appears in each episode to share a story. The celebrity guest brings a special picture book that is brought to life through animation. The celebrity then reads the story using special voices to create an energetic reading.

I got the chance to view Bookaboo with my kids and their friends and it was a hit will all of them. From ages 5 to 9 years old, the show captured the attention of all the kids. It didn’t feel babyish and I even found myself watching the episode. The show kept our attention and it was absolutely adorable! Believe me too when I say I thought it would be cheesy for my older kids with the puppets, but it wasn’t. I think the whole band and music part really is what made it seem “cool.” Then when the story was brought to life I could see the sparks in my kids eyes over how the story was animated. While my kids didn’t necessarily know the celebrity guest, the guest did a great job and I appreciated that I recognized them.

Among the series special guests are Paula Abdul (American Idol), Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight), Molly Parker (House of Cards), Hannah Simone (New Girl), Emily Van Camp (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde),Michael Sheen (The Queen), Guillermo Diaz (Scandal), WWE Wrestler Adam Copeland, NASA Astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield, and NFL player Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bookaboo, the latest addition to Amazon’s award-winning preschool programming slate, is created by Lucy Goodman, Founder of Happy Films, and produced by Happy Films and Sinking Ship Entertainment (Odd Squad, Annedroids).

During our screening, we not only watched a few episodes but also jammed out to music and did some coloring. I like how the music part made the books seem cooler and it was fun to just have fun. I was even able to find Bookaboo coloring sheets on the Bookaboo UK website that was super cute.

After watching Bookaboo, I will say my kids asked for storytime. They asked if I would read the stories like they did on the show and of course we had a mini jam session afterwards. I am even adding the books read in the show to our list of books to check out at the library!
