Keep Your Kids Warm This Winter

Although it only seems like yesterday that we were able to watch our kids frolic in the park on a hot summer’s day, the autumnal hues of burnt oranges and deep reds are well and truly here. It won’t be long before the thermostat is cranked up to the max and we’re bemoaning the short days and chilly nights of winter. As a responsible parent, you want to ensure that your kids aren’t curled up in bed risking frostbite and shivering under the covers every night. Take a look at these ways of ensuring that your little darlings stay warm and safe this winter.

Layer Up

It’s vital that you don’t send your kids to school wearing nothing but a t-shirt, the standard school logo emblazoned sweater and a mediocre coat. Make sure that you consider heat promoting layers. Start by getting hold of some thermal underlayers. These are the best bits of kit to ensure that your little cherub will stay warm and toasty even on the nippiest of days. Opt for longer than average t-shirts, turtlenecks and thicker socks. The first layer of clothing that you dress your offspring in will insulate the most effectively.

Then put on the school uniform. By using layers, you are adding padding and insulation ensuring that you trap the warmest air in between the fibers, preventing the cold air from getting anywhere near to your children’s skin.

Coat

When thinking about the outer layer of clothing, select a jacket or coat that is fully waterproof. Even if they are caught outside in the pummelling rain without an umbrella, you will feel safe in the knowledge that they won’t be walking through your door, taking their coat off and looking like a drowned rat.

If you can combine a windproof protective layer to the outer garment, you’ll be reducing the chill factor. While a gentle warm breeze may be a relief on a balmy summer’s day, the Arctic blast of a winter gust is anything but.

At Home

Even with the best cavity wall insulation, an efficient boiler and a roaring fire, the home can still get chilly on the coldest of days. Ensure that your kids have adequate sweaters, pullovers, and thick knits. Don’t neglect their feet. Appendages that remain as cold as ice can be tricky to get warm. Sock type Glerups slippers made from 100% wool and wholly natural materials are excellent at insulating even the tiniest of feet. Made of felt, they are comfortable and breathable and will prevent your kids feet from feeling anything but toasty.

Ensure that your home remains a comfortable temperature. If the family is enjoying a movie night, put on the fire, grab everyone a hot water bottle to hug and snuggle up together. Getting warm is a great excuse for some quality family time together. Although cold snaps can be tricky to endure, by following these tips you will be making sure that your kids stay warm this winter.

  • I always buy winter clothes during the summer when it's deeply discounted. I just buy a size up for my twins.

  • I love wearing slippers this time of year, and the Glerups slippers are amazing. I would love a pair. We make sure to layer up to keep warm this time of year!

  • Winter is on its way. This is such important information for our families. I really appreciate this article. Thank you so much for sharing

  • I'm a retired teacher and it always amazed me when students would show up to school without a coat (and these kids didn't have any financial problems as it was a very affluent area).
