So back when appliances first came out, they were pretty bare bones. They did the job in the simplest way and they used a lot of power and water. Energy efficiency was not something considered important at first since it was more important to get the appliances working. Then in 1992 the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy started taking note of appliances and electronics that use 20-30% less energy than required by federal standards. That may seem like a little but every little bit helps not only the environment but also your wallet.
