ReThink Concussions With UPMC #rethinkconcussions

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Motherhood on behalf of UPMC.

Did you know that no two concussions are alike? The way everyone experiences a concussion can vary, with symptoms varying greatly. UPMC is a trusted partner and friend to families who are dealing with concussions and has become the leading authority in the comprehensive evaluation, treatment and research regarding concussions. By using proven treatments and evidence-based rehabilitation therapies, UPMC helps patients return to normal lives following a concussion.

I will never forget the night I received a phone call from my little brother’s high school football coach. At the time I actually lived about 20 minutes away, compared to the 60 minutes I live now. His coach called me to say that he couldn’t get ahold of my parents and that Tommy (not a UPMC patient) had blacked out on the field. I honestly moved so fast and actually called my husband from the car to tell him where I went. Luckily my brother was fine but I remember being so scared by the coach using the “c” word. I had no idea really what a concussion was but it sounded bad.

What exactly is a concussion?

Neurons in the body suffer from an “energy crisis.” During this time of “crisis” if the brain suffers an additional injury (concussion), the result could be more severe symptoms and prolonged recovery.

Concussions are actually treatable, and patients can achieve full recovery in the right hands. If not treated appropriately and completely, having a history of concussion may make someone more vulnerable to re-injury.

  • Very interesting and informative post, thanks! You never know when having this information will come in handy. We suspected a concussion years ago with my son, but I had no knowledge whatsoever of what to look for or expect.
