5 Christmas Decorating Tips For Apartment Living

Christmas time is here again, and with it comes all the lights, knick-knacks, baubles, wreaths, mistletoes, and Dad’s not-so-convincing Santa outfit. While the elves are busy cranking out gifts, you’re at home working hard to bring a little Christmas Spirit to your luxury apartment home. We know that it can be difficult to fit a big tree and all of the ideal decorations in an apartment, so we’re here with a few tips to help you decorate this season.

1. Deck the Windows

Break out the boughs of holly, or maybe just the 100 pack of Christmas lights you bought. Since most apartments don’t have a front porch, you’ll have to settle with lining your windows with lights. This doesn’t take up any currently occupied space, so it’s a perfect move for a small apartment. You can also place a nativity scene or other Christmas décor right on the windowsill.

2. Hang Your Cards

This was a tradition in my house for years, and it translates great to apartment decorating. As the season approaches, your mailbox will slowly fill with greeting cards. You can tape each one individually above an entryway, or you can stick a length of string to hang the cards on. This decorating technique is especially effective if you have an archway to really make the design shine.

3. Get the Kids Involved

It’s almost always tradition for the kids to help put decorations on the Christmas tree, but you can make the entire decorating process an event. Put on Christmas music, put out cookies and hot chocolate, and have your kids help you hang wreaths, set up the tree, and put other decorations up around the apartment. They’ll be thrilled to help, and it can be the beginning of a great tradition. Additionally, if you don’t have a lot of room you could always display a minimalist nativity scene on a shelf you normally have pictures or knick-knacks on.

4. Go All Out with Your Tree

This doesn’t mean you need a huge tree—on the contrary; you’re probably trying to save space in your apartment. You can still make it a focal point by getting creative. Place a small-sized tree on a festively decorated table. Place that table in front of one of your light-decorated windows, and it can achieve a beautiful, warm effect. Since space is limited, Instead of popping on a bunch of bulbs, use unique decorations that have meaning or tell a story.

5. Don’t Neglect the Front Door

Even if your apartment or penthouse door doesn’t go directly outside, decorating it can still show your neighbors that you’re getting in the Christmas spirit. A wreath is standard, but you can go a step further by decorating it like a Christmas present. Use green or red construction paper, and then affix a gift tag with your name on it and a stylish bow or ribbon for a little extra flair.

  • I love seeing Christmas cards hung around the doorways and lights on the windows. Good ideas for making everything festive even in small spaces.

  • What a lot of great tips. The card one is my favorite. My mom would always attach her cards to the entry way to the dining room.
