What to Expect in the Final Stages of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is something of a natural phenomenon. The trouble is that every woman is different, and no matter how many people you talk to or how many books or guides you read, you never really know exactly what’s going to happen as those final days draw close. Although your experiences will be unique, if you’re preparing to welcome a new addition to the world, it’s always reassuring to have an idea of what to expect.

Tiredness

Many women find that they feel more tired during the majority of their pregnancy, but in the final days, when your baby is growing and preparing to enter the world, you may feel even more weary than before. As your due date looms, try and get as much rest as possible. If you struggle to get comfortable at night, and this makes it difficult to sleep for long periods of time, it may be best to nap during the day. It’s worth using pregnancy pillows and adjusting your position to make yourself as comfortable as possible.

Pain and early contractions

During the third trimester, as the due date approaches, it’s very common to experience tightening and short bursts of discomfort, which is caused by Braxton Hicks contractions. You can research online to learn what Braxton Hicks contractions are, but there’s no need to worry or get anxious if you do start to develop pains and bouts of tightness. Braxton Hicks are often referred to as warm-up contractions, and they prepare you for birth. If you are going through Braxton Hicks contractions, try and relax and stay calm.

Back pain

Back pain is incredibly common in pregnant women, and it can affect expectant moms throughout pregnancy. In the latter stages, when the body is under strain and the weight of the baby is increasing day on day, pain can be particularly intense. If you are struggling, take a bath or go for a swim, as the water supports your body weight and can help to ease tension. It’s also a good idea to adjust your body position. Many women find certain positions much more comfortable than others. It can take a while and a period of trial and error to find the best options for you.

Movement

Every baby is different, and some are more active than others. In the final weeks of pregnancy, pay close attention to your baby’s activity levels, and don’t hesitate to seek advice if your baby is less active than usual, or you don’t feel them move for a prolonged period of time. It’s always best to err on the side of caution.

Breathing and relaxation

It’s natural to be apprehensive about giving birth. Most couples approach their due date with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. If you are feeling anxious or worried, try breathing exercises and spend some time doing things that relax you, for example reading a book, listening to music, painting, sewing or watching TV. It’s also a good idea to try and get out and stretch your legs a couple of times a day.

If you’re counting down the days until your due date, you may be wondering just what those final few hours hold. It’s impossible to know exactly what will happen when your baby is ready to come into the world, but preparing in advance is always wise.
