4 Interesting Things You Learn About Someone on a Road Trip

When you spend a whole lot of time with someone, it’s impossible for all their different sides not to come out. There’s no longer any need to put up a front or try to be what you’re not. This is something that you can experience with any relationship, whether it’s your spouse, your friends or your kids. Spending an extended amount of time with a person teaches you so much about who they are and how they function.

Nothing makes people spend a lot of time together like a road trip. All those hours in a confined space, experiencing different things and different emotions coming up. That’s both the joy and challenge of a road trip. You get to really bond with whoever you’re traveling with, because going through the parts of the trip brings you closer together, and helps you connect. On the other hand, you will see some of their flaws and things that annoy you will come up. So what are some of the things that will be revealed when you’re on a road trip.

How They Act When They Are Tired or Hungry

Nothing reveals more about a person than how they handle being hungry or tired. Think about it, they aren’t rested or fed, and that means they won’t be at their best. It’s interesting to see if they become irritable, lose focus, become “hangry” or if they completely shut down and how they will communicate with you in that state. If you can get through a road trip where you see how someone is when they aren’t feeling too good, you’ll have a stronger relationship.

How They Handle Conflict

When you spend a lot of time with someone, conflict is inevitable. There are going to be moments where you don’t agree, whether it’s where you want to stop and eat, or what to play on the radio. Everyone has their own conflict resolution style, and even minor annoyances can bring them out. You get to see if someone sulks and withdraws, if they lash out or become passive aggressive. Because you have your own style, this will allow you and them to get on the same page so you can resolve arguments in a more constructive way.

Their Attitude to Safety and Protocol

Some people are super cautious and others are reckless. When you go on a road trip with them, you will see how they are. Even before the trip you will see how they plan things, whether they consider important details like whether your car is serviced, whether you need something like Good Sam ESP for your RV, or what might go wrong and come up with a contingency. It’s always good to know that your travel mate cares about these things because they are important. If this is an area you are lacking in, it will be a great help.

Their Favorite Music

One of the best things about road trips is the driving music, because that will inevitably come up. You’ll probably have some conflict over what to play, and once you agree on it, it will be a very enlightening experience. Maybe they like to sing along to Britney Spears, drive to Enya, or belt out some classic rock and roll. People love different things, and very often you will be very surprised by some of the song choices that come up.

Sure, you might already know some of the stuff they listen to, but trust me, a road trip playlist takes this to a new level. What would really be fun is sitting down and coming up with road trip playlist before you even leave. You could compile something you both love, and even after the trip, keep it as a wonderful memory.

Going on a road trip is considered one of the greatest experiences out there because it truly is, especially when you’re traveling with someone or people you love. You really get to bond and get to know more about each other. There’s something about a car and the open road that really brings out both the best and worst out of people. When you learn something minor that annoys you, remember that you have your own stuff too. You also annoy them and you also have flaws, so accept their issues too. This actually makes a road trip a great opportunity to grow in your relationship or friendship. Truly caring for someone is when you know their flaws, accept that they aren’t perfect and still love them anyway. Your relationship will be so much stronger because of it.
