You fell in love, you said ‘yes’ and you said ‘I do’, and now you’re sharing your days with a partner you chose, and you are both trying to make a life together for better and for worse. Both men and women, however, can sometimes feel like the everyday grind of life is taking them away from the finer things; emotions, softness, and little gestures of appreciation. Don’t let your husband feel like he’s been taken for granted, and make him feel appreciated with these simple gestures.
When couples get comfortable in each other’s company, and as routine sets in, they generally tend to forget to thank each other for the simple things, or pay each other compliments. Remember when you first got engaged? Everyone asked how you met, or how he proposed, and there was always a chance to talk each other up in public. Now that you’re married, things shouldn’t be any different; let your collective friends and family know what a good husband, provider, and man he is. Compliment him in front of others, let the world know that he is your hero – just try not to make it too cheesy!
People typically expect presents on occasions like their birthday, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and anniversaries. But if you want to put a genuine smile on his face, put some money aside and buy him something – just for him – when there’s no occasion at all. It’s no longer difficult to find something your husband would like, as there are many great gift ideas for men on the market today. Pair it with a sweet card or a note that says something like “Thank you for being you!” or “I feel lucky because you’re mine!” and watch his face glow with happiness as he opens your gift, no matter how small.
Men, too, like to hear that they’re attractive – it’s not exclusively a woman kind of thing, so tell him often how handsome he is. If he puts on a shirt that you particularly like, don’t just say “I like this shirt” – rather say “You always look so good in this shirt!” When he wears a pair of jeans that you think makes him look fit, say something like “You’re such a hunk in those jeans.” And if at any point throughout the day you catch him genuinely smiling, try something like “Hm… I’ll never get over that smile of yours!”
They say that food is the way to a man’s heart, and whether or not this saying is true, everyone loves going home to find their favorite treat waiting for them at the table. Take some time to create a list of your husband’s favorite meals, snacks and treats, and pick a random day to prepare one of them, just because!
While it’s easy to forget the little things as you get caught in the daunting daily routines of work, chores, errands, family obligations and financial planning, a little gesture can go along way. Although your husband may be performing all of his duties to the fullest, he will be a much happier man knowing that you still appreciate him. Not only will he be more satisfied, but you too will feel a rush of love as you remind yourself of the reasons why you got married in the first place.
Marriage and romance can coexist if we pay attention to the small details, so use the tips in this article as a way to start, and keep going! Find ideas online; make lists of the things he likes, wants, or enjoys; and keep the love cycle flowing.
