9 Ways To Save On Your Car Insurance

Comprehensive car insurance is important for any driver, to cover you in the case of an accident. It can be an expensive part of car ownership, but with these tips, you can save money on your car insurance

  1. Shop around for the best deals. Different insurance companies offer different deals, so it’s important to look at a few for the best deal. Some companies offer deals for women, or drivers over a certain age, so make sure you check if there are any deals you’re eligible for. Use an online comparison service to find the best price for the best service. Remember to also check prices with companies not on comparison sites.  You might be lucky enough to get an sr22 insurance starting at $10 per month that covers most of your needs.
  2. Don’t automatically add everyone onto your policy. If you and your spouse are the main drivers of the car, put both of you onto the insurance, but don’t automatically add people who might drive the car occasionally. More drivers will cost you more. If you need to add someone for a few days use, insure them for that period, then remove them again.
  3. Protect your no claims bonus. Taking a higher premium may cost a little more, but it protects any no claims bonuses you may have built up, saving you hundreds over the year. Check your policy carefully to be sure what counts as a claim.
  4. Increase Your Excess. If you agree to pay out more in the case of an accident, your monthly premiums are bound to come down. Make sure you choose an amount you can still afford, and check if you could recover the excess in the event of an accident that isn’t your fault.
  5. Keep your car secure. The easiest way to save on insurance is to keep your car safe and declare these measures on your insurance. If you can, keep the car in a garage overnight. Even being on your driveway instead of parked in the street is considered less risk by insurers. Fit an alarm, immobiliser or tracking device if your car doesn’t have one. When you’re not using the car, use a steering wheel lock to deter would-be thieves. Fitting a dashcam can also be a useful tool to prove fault if you have an accident.
  6. Haggle. Most people don’t know you can haggle with some insurance companies. Compare prices and when you’ve found the cheapest, call your preferred company and see what they offer you. Many will match the lowest price you’ve found.
  7. Avoid extra charges. Check if there are monthly charges if you pay your insurance a certain way. Direct debit is usually the easiest and cheapest way to pay.
  8. Transfer No Claims. If you’ve been a named driver on someone else’s policy, like a parent, and never claimed, see if you can transfer your no claims history over to your own policy. Take advantage of your clean driving record!
  9. Choose the right car. Certain models of car, such as sportier models, can be more expensive to insure. Choose a car with a smaller engine, or choose a different model to dodge those extra charges.
